Strictly Come Dancing’s Wynne Evans is ‘heartbroken’ by public reaction to ‘hand incident’ with pro partner Katya Jones
As a seasoned observer of the world of entertainment, I can’t help but feel a pang of empathy for Wynne Evans, the Opera singer and Strictly Come Dancing contestant. His heart is undoubtedly heavy with the weight of unintended consequences from a simple joke gone awry.
Wynne Evans, a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, expressed his deep sadness upon noticing the response to an instance where his hand accidentally moved away from dance partner Katya Jones‘ waist during the Saturday night performance.
They’ve both issued apologies, explaining that it was meant as a joke following the spread of a video depicting the occurrence on various social media platforms.
The announcement arises during increased examination of the widely acclaimed BBC One dance program, as stars have openly criticized their experiences on the long-standing production that is now marking its 20th anniversary.
52-year-old opera singer Evans, famously linked with the Go Compare insurance commercials, expressed deep sorrow to BBC Radio Wales over the allegations made against him in recent days: ‘I’m completely devastated by the statements published about me.’
In a less than ideal era, it’s important to note that Katya and I share an exceptionally strong bond, more like kindred spirits, and on the weekend, we exchanged a rather foolish jest.
Originally, the jest seemed amusing to us, but in retrospect, it wasn’t funny at all. Unfortunately, our intention was misunderstood completely.
It seems that whatever it is, Katya has discussed it across her social media platforms. She clarified that her initial response was merely a jest and she was not at all offended or uncomfortable by it.
We share a wonderful, close-knit friendship, and if anyone felt uncomfortable by it, I apologize, as it was meant to be a jest. In truth, there isn’t any deep narrative behind it; just a friendly bond between us.
‘And I feel weird apologising because I feel like I’ve not really done anything.’
In an interview on Radio Wales Breakfast prior to hosting his new show, he admitted that he had made an error in judgment about something, and also clarified that he is absolutely enthusiastic and committed to participating in Strictly.

Additionally, the radio host expressed his frustration with all the commotion, mentioning that listeners could join him and his co-host for a detailed discussion about it on the supplementary program “Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two.
On Sunday, Evans along with 35-year-old Jones shared a video on Instagram, apologizing for a harmless prank they pulled in the Clauditorium the previous night. They stated that it was all just a lighthearted jest.
In another moment on Saturday night, Jones appeared to not want to high-five her celebrity partner.
A caption alongside their video explained that ‘high 5’s is a running joke’.
According to a reliable source, both Wynne and Katya admitted that the playful antics observed at the Clauditorium were pre-arranged jokes between them. They’ve extended their apologies to anyone who might have misunderstood their jests.
‘They addressed them on Wynne’s Instagram, where their apology can be found.
Katya wants to make it clear that she didn’t take offense to Wynne, and she felt absolutely comfortable around her.
‘The welfare team have checked in on the pair and there are no further actions planned.’
On Saturday, the pair achieved their best performance yet, earning a total of 34 points from the judges during their rendition of the tango to Abba’s “Money, Money, Money.
For this year’s Strictly rehearsals, chaperones have been installed as a precaution, following an investigation initiated by the BBC in response to complaints lodged by Amanda Abbington, the Sherlock actress, concerning her 2023 professional dance partner, Giovanni Pernice.
The BBC expressed their apologies to Abbington, stating that they’ve examined the complaints and found certain ones to be valid, while others were not.
Pernice has consistently refuted the accusations and expressed satisfaction following the investigation which found no evidence of the abuse claims against him.
In their announcement for the upcoming changes in September, the BBC detailed the implementation of fresh safety precautions for training and rehearsals, effective for this year’s production.
‘The team had several additions: a constant presence of a production member during training room rehearsals, two new positions focused on show support, such as a celebrity welfare producer and a professional dancer welfare producer (who both began working in August), and extra training given to the professional dancers, production staff, and crew.’
