Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Ayling-Ellis reveals what key moment with Giovanni Pernice she ‘hated’
As a compassionate observer, I find myself deeply moved by the lives of these extraordinary individuals who have overcome adversity and used their experiences to inspire others. Rose, a talented actress and advocate for better education of BSL, has not only made a significant impact on her partner Giovanni but also on the world at large. Her journey is a testament to the power of resilience and determination.
2021’s Strictly Come Dancing champion, Rose Ayling-Ellis, shared that a particularly emotional scene featuring her and partner Giovanni Pernice on the program left her feeling uncomfortable or uneasy.
2021 saw EastEnders actress (age 29) and her dance partner Giovanni (age 34) from Strictly Come Dancing, leave viewers in tears with a moving performance where they executed some of their dance moves without music.
In sign language, Rose, a member of the deaf community, and an Italian celebrity danced to the song “Symphony” by Clean Bandit as a gesture of respect towards the deaf community.
In their modern daily practice, they danced for a span of thirty seconds, entirely devoid of any music playing.
The dance proved so moving it was celebrated at the BAFTAs with an award for ‘moment of the year’.
Three long years have passed since the initial proposal, and I, a devoted admirer, can hardly believe the words that Rose confided in her recent interview with The Guardian: she initially resisted the idea when it was first brought to light.
She clarified that she believed her actions might appear as insincere attempts to solicit sympathy, and she didn’t wish for anyone to view them as mere tokens or gestures without genuine intent.
To The Guardian, the actress expressed her displeasure: “I found it disappointing. Upon viewing a prerecorded dance routine created by outside choreographers, I instantly felt unimpressed with their ideas.
‘I was up for the idea, as long as it wasn’t a patronising stunt.’
She pointed out that it seemed distorted, as hearing people often misunderstand the experiences of deaf individuals, stating, “It’s the way hearing people imagine deaf people experience life.
‘Very insular, cut-off, small. It was so sad. And that’s not me.’
Instead, she believed the routine ought to be lively, dynamic, and teeming with energy, so they opted to dance to the song “Symphony.
As stated by Rose, she recognized that the situation would be significant, and indeed, it turned out to be so, as numerous viewers considered the performance a pivotal moment in the show’s 20-year history.
Apart from her acting career, Rose is also featured in documentaries and actively supports the improvement of British Sign Language (BSL) education.
Due to her influence, Giovanni started using sign language interpreters during his performances outside of Strictly when he went on tour around the country.
This year, Giovanni departed from the show after a nine-year run due to an official grievance lodged by his partner for 2023, Amanda Abbington.
Amanda claimed that the dancer exhibited behavior which proved to be ‘unmanageably detrimental’ during the five weeks she worked with him, ultimately leading her to leave the production due to bullying.
Since then, the BBC has initiated an investigation into his behavior in the training room, yet Rose has remained silent on the accusations leveled against him.
Before the findings of the investigation become public, Giovanni made known over the weekend that he is transitioning to participate in the Italian adaptation of the show, having decided to step away from the allegations.
Rose’s admission comes as Tasha Ghouri has broken her silence on the scandal.
On Sunday, prior to her upcoming appearance on the show that begins later this month, Giovanni’s ex-love interest, Tasha, shared her perspectives.
Previously known for her time on Love Island, a 26-year-old individual (who was born deaf) had a relationship with a professional figure, aged 34, approximately half a year prior to her appearance on the popular ITV dating program.
Tasha recently shared with The Sun about the controversy: “I didn’t witness it myself; I’m participating in this show for my individual journey. That’s why I’m concentrating on myself, simply to savor it.
She mentioned her previous relationship with Giovanni: “I’ve run into him a couple of times, but that was long ago. We no longer communicate; it feels like something from long ago. My life is wonderful with Andrew now, and he’s my future, so I prefer not to discuss the past.
I prefer not to share any opinions regarding the accusations towards Giovanni. My focus is solely on my personal experiences, and myself during this time.
Tasha shared that she’s gotten guidance from a past winner of the show, Rose, who is deaf like herself and danced with Giovanni.
