Strictly Come Dancing star Craig Revel Horwood admits he’s toned down his notorious catty judging style because ‘it would be classed as bullying, and then I’d be cancelled’
As an ardent fan of Strictly Come Dancing, I have to admit that the evolution of Craig Revel Horwood over the past two decades has been quite fascinating. From his no-holds-barred, brutally honest critiques to his more constructive and considerate approach today, it’s clear that he’s softened his style on the dance floor.
Craig Revel Horwood, a judge on Strictly Come Dancing, has confessed that the blunt criticisms he made twenty years ago would be classified as ‘bullying’ in today’s standards. He acknowledges that if he were to say those same remarks now, he could face cancellation.
Over time, the well-known judge from Strictly Come Dancing has become recognized for his straightforward criticisms and biting wit. However, in a recent statement, he revealed that he’s adopted a more compassionate style when evaluating performances on the popular entertainment program.
In an interview with Radio Times, he said, “Over the past two decades, I’ve adjusted my approach to judging. To put it mildly, I was quite stern back then. Reflecting on those times, I think, ‘Wow, that was rather severe.’ Nowadays, such behavior might be labeled as bullying, and I could potentially face consequences like being removed from public view.
59-year-old Revel Horwood, a mainstay since Strictly Come Dancing debuted in 2004, takes his place alongside Anton Du Beke, Motsi Mabuse, and lead judge Shirley Ballas on the judging panel.
He said his approach has shifted toward a more constructive style, where he thinks ‘more like a teacher than a judge.’
As a devoted follower, I once carried a reputation for being firm with individuals who struggled with dance. However, that was before my life took an unexpected turn when I found myself partnered with horticulturist Jonathan Myring.
‘I was very direct. I do still say what’s wrong, but you can wrap the truth in a nice way.’
He stated, “I’m not concerned with their feelings. Their reactions are irrelevant to me, as they should be learning and valuing my perspective.
The judge’s harsh critiques on the dance competition have resulted in internet bullies bombarding him with menacing messages, including threats of harm and verbal abuse.
Instead of letting negative remarks get to him, Revel Horwood views them as amusement, frequently finding humor in the poorly constructed criticisms.
‘I read these comments and think, “Wonderful, that’s a brilliant one for the book.”
‘I find their communications to be as if they were from a cartoon. They seem to struggle with forming coherent sentences. When I respond, I often say something like, “Thank you for your input! It would be helpful if you could take the time to learn proper spelling before expressing your thoughts.”‘
As The Mail on Sunday disclosed, for the first time ever, the BBC is penning some judge’s remarks as part of an effort aimed at capturing the interest of a more youthful audience.
The reaction from the judges has been unfavorable as they find the written dialogue too awkward, overly polished, and sometimes overtly political.
Viewers also noticed that Revel Horwood has been less abrasive this series.
An anonymous source inside reported: ‘The judges have expressed concerns that the comments they’re given to make seem too scripted. This issue is starting to create some difficulties.’
The latest edition of Radio Times is out now.
