Strictly Come Dancing reveals FIRST LOOK at Amy Dowden’s dazzling return to the show as she leads a celebratory group dance dedicated to cancer sufferers
As a fervent admirer of resilience and determination, I must say that Amy Dowden’s journey has left me in awe. The grace with which she faced her breast cancer diagnosis, underwent treatment, and continued to shine as an inspiration for millions is truly remarkable.
Strictly Come Dancing has shared a preview of Amy Dowden making her significant comeback on the dance floor.
Ever since they shared that devastating news about her diagnosis back in May 2023, I’ve been on tenterhooks, waiting for my beloved dance sensation to grace the stage again. You see, she’s the one who enchanted us all with her mesmerizing moves since joining the show way back in 2017. Yet, here we are, without her presence, as she battles the formidable foe that is stage three breast cancer. My heart goes out to her, and I eagerly await her triumphant return.
Last year proved to be exceptionally challenging for Amy as she faced a mastectomy, chemotherapy, fertility treatment, and narrowly escaped death from sepsis. Her courageous battle against cancer has been recently captured in a documentary.
After receiving the green light, the stunning Welsh woman will put on her dancing shoes again and unite with her professional dancing colleagues for a joyful group performance to celebrate her comeback.
The empowering routine, which will be aired during the BBC show’s series 20 launch in September, will be dedicated to those currently fighting cancer as well as her fellow ‘pink sisters’.
Amy is all geared up to captivate everyone in a striking pink outfit while she dances the fast-paced quickstep, which was designed by Jason Gilkison, alongside her friends and will undoubtedly be the main attraction.
The team plans to play a mix of songs such as “Training Season” by Dua Lipa, “Busy Earnin'” and “Keep Moving” by Jungle, and “Candle Flame” by Jungle featuring Eric the Architect. This medley will be performed by Dave Arch and his band.
Thrilled beyond words, here I am, eagerly anticipating my reunion with the cherished Strictly family! Gratitude fills me as I’m given this precious chance, more so in this remarkable year that holds such significance for this iconic series.
It seems as though I’ve stepped back into my first year all over again. My excitement is palpable! I can hardly wait to be reunited with the entire team, for the costumes, the dance routines, meeting the celebrities and judges. Everyone around me is chuckling at my uncontrollable grinning.
She poignantly added: ‘I’d like to dedicate this dance to my pink sisters who have supported me through the past year and to all those currently facing cancer.’
Simultaneously, executive producer Sarah James expressed her delight, stating, “We’re absolutely thrilled that Amy has returned to Strictly Ballroom.”
“I’m thrilled to welcome myself back, brimming with my unique flair, love for dance, inventive moves, and distinct Welsh allure. Here’s to making this year even more exceptional!”
Last month, the star who shared that cancer had profoundly impacted her, announced her return to Strictly Come Dancing in September, following a temporary absence from the show due to her treatment the previous year.
After her treatment, she’s now been informed that no traces of the disease can be found in her body.
Unfortunately, because of the kind of cancer she has, Amy can’t get a clean bill of health until five years have gone by.
Following the announcement of her comeback, Amy expressed her joy on Instagram about resuming activities she cherishes. This news surfaced only two days after she celebrated the one-year milestone since her initial surgery, which followed her diagnosis.
“She expressed her joy and gratitude, saying, ‘It’s wonderful to be back on @bbcstrictly! My heart is overflowing with happiness!’ She considers them the finest team, both on and off the dance floor.”
She exclaimed: “I am thrilled beyond measure to soon return to my favorite activity in life, which is dancing! I feel grateful and more exhilarated than ever before. Let’s get started! Thank you @bbcstrcitly for your continuous support.” #AmyIsBack
From 2017 to 2022, Amy participated as a professional dancer on the BBC reality show. However, due to her diagnosis, she was unable to compete in the 2023 season.
Last May, on the day following her return from her honeymoon with Tom Parkes, she received a diagnosis of breast cancer.
In an interview with BBC Breakfast in April, she shared: “I was truly enjoying life, dancing on Strictly Come Dancing and newlywed. Yet, cancer knows no boundaries.”
Recently, Amy was featured in a documentary that chronicled Amy’s journey battling cancer across various stages.
This past week, viewers found themselves moved to tears and hailed Amy as a source of inspiration after she courageously shared her battle with breast cancer in her emotional BBC documentary titled Cancer and Me.
In the movie, there were numerous poignant scenes, such as Amy undergoing her initial chemotherapy treatment, enduring a tense period of waiting for test results, and bravely shaving her head to cope with her hair loss.
As the events transpired, numerous spectators flocked to X (previously referred to as Twitter), eager to express their awe for the skilled Welsh dancer. Many expressed that they had wept while watching her battle with ill health.
They penned: ‘Tough watch, but what an inspiration.’
