Strictly Come Dancing Pro’s Dirty Little Secret
Gorka Marquez, a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, shared that he has altered his training techniques to suit his celebrity partners in light of the controversy surrounding bullying on the show.
The 34-year-old dancer expressed his conviction that effective teaching requires adapting to the unique abilities and requirements of every student, particularly those who may be more emotionally delicate.
Last year, popular dancer Giovanni Pernice had to step down from the popular BBC dance program due to an investigation into his actions, following allegations of abusive behavior made by his previous famous dancing partner, Amanda Abbington.
After multiple accusations of abusive conduct, it became necessary for Graziano Di Prima to leave the extended program as well.
Inquired whether the scandal had influenced his own teaching approach, Gorka, who has been teamed with celebrities such as Helen Skelton and Dr Punam Krishan since joining the show in 2016, shared with The Mirror: “I adapt my training techniques for every celebrity, each year. This is because everyone is unique.
The dancer, along with partner Gemma Atkinson, age 40, has two children: Mia, who is now two years old, and Thiago, who is one year old. He analogized his approach to these responsibilities with that of parenthood.
‘Just as each child has unique personality traits, so too does each learner require a tailored educational approach. For instance, what works for one student may not work for another, with boys potentially being more active and girls possibly showing greater sensitivity.’
Initially, it’s more about trial and error during the first few weeks since you haven’t met this person before. However, as time passes, you gradually come to understand them better.
In September, the BBC investigation found that Giovanni was not guilty on ten of the sixteen accusations brought forward by Amanda. However, he has been missing from this season’s broadcast.
According to the BBC’s report, he was found not guilty of the gravest allegations involving physical violence, yet it did confirm instances of verbal abuse and intimidation.
Giovanni disclosed that he faced challenging periods, or “hard times,” following the shocking allegations about bullying made against him.
He admitted, “To be completely honest, I faced some very difficult periods where it seemed like everything was over for me and my career had reached its end. That was definitely a low point for me.
‘Sorry for my language but 2024 can f**k off. I’ve been looking forward to seeing the back of it.’
In response to Amanda’s sensational revelations, he added: ‘I managed to keep my composure whenever she gave another interview. Let me assure you, it wasn’t simple, there were challenging periods.’
As a devoted follower, I want to share that although my superior didn’t validate the accusations of physical aggression towards Giovanni, they did acknowledge some instances of verbal bullying and harassment raised by actress Amanda. This shows a commitment to maintaining a respectful work environment.
The BBC also agreed with she that at times he appeared to be giving her overly negative feedback.
During the 2023 series, it was reported that Graziana was removed from the show in July due to allegations of verbal and physical abuse towards his partner, Zara McDermott.
He left the United Kingdom immediately upon the revelation of the scandal, returning to his homeland Italy along with his ballerina spouse, who stars in the Italian adaptation of the popular series.
During July, Mark Borkowski, representing Graziano, shared with BBC News that there’s no appropriate moment for actions such as kicking, which he acknowledges is inappropriate.
He knows he’s made a mistake. He apologised at the time.’
According to media accounts, Mark stated, “However, he seems unaware of certain aspects related to it. The portrayals of the topic in online discussions, and his own recollections, do not match up.
He went on to say, “Graziano has intentionally separated himself from society, a decision I believe is prudent given his circumstances. His wife agrees and supports this move. It appears he’s working through his mental health challenges.
Graziano, who thought the issue was already settled, was let go from the program when a video related to his concept became known to the BBC just recently.
Based on what sources inside the show claim, videos showing Graziano treating Zara unfairly left the management with no other option except to terminate his contract.
On Instagram, Graziano expressed his sincere regrets about the circumstances leading to his exit from Strictly. He admitted that his strong desire and dedication to triumph could have impacted his training methods.
‘Respecting the BBC HR process, I understand it’s best for the show that I step away.’
He went on to say, “Though certain parts of this tale with outside factors require silence for now, I stand firm in providing strength and support for my loved ones.
‘I wish the Strictly family and the BBC nothing but success in the future.’
In his final thoughts, he expressed gratitude towards all those who have aided him in his professional and personal journey. He promised to reveal his tale when the opportune moment arrives.
