The Problem With ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Future
The Nightmare on Elm Street series has struggled due to a self-created predicament, primarily because the iconic character Freddy Krueger is played by Robert Englund.
In many famous horror characters like Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Leatherface, it’s convenient that they are masked and typically silent, allowing for easy replacement of actors portraying them. Unlike Freddy Krueger, who is deeply associated with Robert Englund, or Luke Skywalker who embodies Mark Hamill, these characters could potentially be recast; however, any new actor would carry the weighty shadow of their predecessor, a legacy that might cast a lingering doubt on their performance.
The 2010 Nightmare on Elm Street remake with Jackie Earle Haley, who was also in Watchmen, didn’t do well primarily because Haley wasn’t Robert Englund and his portrayal of Freddy Krueger didn’t align with what fans were expecting. Additionally, other issues and attempts to reimagine the iconic character contributed to its failure.
In the fullness of time, there’s a strong possibility that someone will rekindle the Nightmare on Elm Street series, and that person might very well be Jason Blum from Blumhouse Productions. But whoever decides to tackle this project should brace themselves for a fierce ordeal, as getting the franchise out of its current predicament won’t be easy.
