Straw
Tyler Perry has signed a long-term contract with a studio that has been financially successful for him. One of his most recent productions, the mystery thriller “A Fall from Grace,” is another hit in his extensive collection.
Perry, over time, has been involved in numerous productions for the streaming platform, spanning movies and series. The latest creation of Madea received mixed evaluations from critics yet favorable ones from viewers. This new release catapulted Straw into a streaming sensation, as it topped global charts with impressive viewership numbers, according to reports.
During the period from June 2nd to June 8th, the mystery thriller took the lead with a staggering 25.3 million views and a whopping 48.5 million hours watched. Given that it premiered on June 6th, it managed to amass an impressive number of viewers in just three days, cementing its status as a major success. The film climbed into the Top 10 charts in 81 countries globally and was crowned No. 1 in a remarkable 26 nations, with the United States among them.
Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, who gave the mystery thriller a score of just 46%, resulting in a “rotten” rating based on 13 reviews, Henson’s performance has still earned praise. Interestingly, since its premiere, the film has been well-received by subscribers, with 76% expressing their enjoyment.
The movie titled “Straw” was crafted by Perry, who also collaborated on its production with Angi Bones and Tony Strickland. This suspenseful tale features Janiya Wiltkinson in the lead role. The story centers around Janiya, a devoted single mother whose child frequently falls ill. Over time, various minor troubles escalate into a severe emotional collapse that impacts those in her circle. In addition to Janiya, the film boasts performances from Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Sinbad, Rockmond Dunbar, Ashley Versher, Mike Merrill, and Glynn Turman.
Straw is Perry’s second suspenseful novel following one that debuted on Prime Video in March. The story received relatively low marks, as it didn’t garner many critic reviews to determine an average score, but a mere 26% approval from viewers.
Tyler Perry Will Return to the Madea Franchise
One of Perry’s most identifiable creations is the enduring Madea series. This series started in 2005 with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” following her debut in the 1999 stage play “I Can Do Bad All by Myself.” Today, the series carries on with new productions.
Tyler Perry’s film, “Madea’s Bahamas Wedding,” promises an unforgettable destination wedding experience for Madea, as she travels to the beautiful Bahamas.
In the new movie, Perry is responsible for penning the script, guiding its direction, and overseeing production, working alongside his long-term collaborators Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland. This filmmaker not only plays the lead role, but so do Joe Simmons and Brian Simmons. Additionally, Cassi Davis, Tamela Mann, David Mann, Diamond White, and Taja V. Simpson are part of the cast. The upcoming “Madea” installment will make it Perry’s sixth film released through Netflix.
