The much-awaited fifth season of Stranger Things is set to bring the popular science-fiction/horror series to a close, wrapping up its era. Yet, it’s not just the show that is nearing an end; the makers have some changes in store as well. The creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, are moving from Netflix to Paramount. Although this development represents a fresh creative chapter for the Duffers, it raises a concern for me regarding potential spinoffs of Stranger Things due to their departure from Netflix.
Previously, rumors circulated that the Duffer Brothers were considering leaving Netflix. Now, these rumors have been substantiated as The Hollywood Reporter confirms that they’ve signed a four-year agreement with Paramount (following its merger with Skydance). This deal covers television, film, and streaming projects. What excites the Duffers most is the opportunity to write, produce, and direct big-screen movies. In a statement, they shared their enthusiasm about this new partnership.
We’re absolutely ecstatic about becoming part of Paramount’s esteemed group. David, Josh [Greenstein], and Dana [Goldberg] are committed to producing daring, unique films for the big screen, and we’re honored to contribute to this vision. This opportunity isn’t just exhilarating – it’s the realization of a long-held aspiration. To be joining a studio with such a rich Hollywood history is an honor we don’t underestimate. Additionally, we’re delighted to reconnect with our friends Cindy and Matt, who supported us from the beginning with that unconventional script that eventually became Stranger Things. They took a leap of faith with us in 2015, and they’re doing it again – we can hardly wait to collaborate on new narratives together.
The Duffers expressed gratitude towards Netflix and praised their management team, describing their tenure, which concludes in April 2026 when their current contract expires, as “remarkable.” Netflix has given the brothers a chance to create fresh intellectual properties, which will be produced under their Upside Down Pictures banner. Although I’m thrilled about the possibility of the Duffers exploring new projects, I’m somewhat apprehensive regarding the impact on the planned Stranger Things spinoffs.
Apart from Stranger Things Season 5, the Duffers currently have two other shows in development at Netflix – The Boroughs, a intriguing sci-fi series, and Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, a horror show. Additionally, an animated spinoff of Stranger Things has been commissioned, and rumors suggest that more spinoffs might be forthcoming. However, according to THR, Matt and Ross Duffer will only act as executive producers in future installments of the franchise, implying they may have less creative control.
For now, let’s be patient and find out what the future holds for Stranger Things, as the Duffer Brothers may not play a significant role in its development. Immediately, don’t forget to subscribe to Netflix, so you can watch Season 5, Part 1 when it premieres on November 26, 2025, according to the current television schedule.
