As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for talent and a deep appreciation for the intersection of art and legacy, I am thrilled to see Maya Hawke take on the narration of Joan Didion’s iconic work, “Slouching Towards Bethlehem.” The 26-year-old Stranger Things star has proven herself to be not only a gifted actress but also an astute reader and interpreter of powerful literary works.
I have the exciting opportunity to lend my voice to the audiobook adaptation of Joan Didion’s classic work, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, published in 1968.
This renowned literary work by the deceased author (who passed away at 87 in 2021) encompasses nonfiction pieces titled “On Keeping a Notebook” and “Goodbye to All That”.
According to what People magazine reported, the 26-year-old actor from Stranger Things expressed that he has long admired Joan Didion’s literary work.
As a devoted admirer, it’s been truly captivating for me to delve into the essays from Slouching Towards Bethlehem, penned by her during her 20s. Even after nearly six decades, I find myself bonding with her words, sharing a sense of companionship that transcends time.
She remarked, ‘It’s a privilege to be able to tell her remarkable stories and make her famous writing known to a fresh audience.’

Born to well-known parents Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, Hawke brings a unique background that includes prior narration work.
In my professional journey as an audiobook narrator, I’ve had the privilege of lending my voice to captivating stories such as Alexi Pappas’ inspiring memoir, “Bravey,” and James Ellroy’s gripping novel, “American Tabloid.
Additionally, she lent her voice to the character Anxiety in this year’s animated follow-up, Inside Out 2.
Joan Didion was renowned for her provocative social commentary and measured literary voice.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I can confidently attest that Joan Didion was an exceptionally incisive author and keen observer of our society. Her groundbreaking works of fiction, analysis, and memoir have garnered countless accolades and are now recognized as timeless classics – a testament to her enduring influence in the literary world.
On November 5, Macmillan Audio will release the audio book version of Slouching Toward Bethlehem.
Ahead of the release date, it is available for preorder.
During an interview with The Times, published in June, Hawke acknowledged that she feels at ease when associated with other children of famous Hollywood figures who have been recipients of nepotism.

The New York City native expressed, ‘There are plenty of individuals who should rightfully experience this lifestyle, yet find themselves without it. However, I am content with not meriting it and proceeding nonetheless. I understand that my inaction wouldn’t benefit anyone.’
She mentioned, “When I initially began, I saw two possible routes. One option was to alter my name, undergo a nose job, and audition for open casting calls.
The rising actress and singer declared, ‘It’s okay to be made fun of when you’re in rarefied air. It’s a lucky place to be.
‘The honesty and positivity in my relationships with my parents is unmatched, making any external opinions on them seem insignificant.’
