The second part of Stranger Things has arrived, and it’s packed with shocking twists and a terrifying new threat called The Abyss. The creators, The Duffer Brothers, are now sharing details about this mysterious world and how they developed the concept.
Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of the show, recently spoke with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant about season 5, part 2. They discussed the idea for a new world called the Abyss, explaining how it originated and why they ultimately decided to go in a different direction as the story evolved.
That idea actually came from the first season. When we were initially developing the show, we spent a lot of time figuring out the nature of the Upside Down. We collaborated with our writers, and at that point, we didn’t call it ‘the Abyss’ – we referred to it as ‘Dimension X’.
Matt Duffer: Dimension X.
That line was a nod to Teenage Ninja Turtles. But beyond that, we always intended the Upside Down to be a gateway to another dimension – the source of the monsters. It was a satisfying moment to finally show the audience what it was and let our characters explore it firsthand.
Matt Duffer: I mean, it is technically another planet.
Ross Duffer: That’s right.

I was really fascinated to learn more about the origins of the Upside Down while watching Stranger Things: The First Shadow. The play introduced me to a young Henry Creel, and it turns out his first encounter with what would become the Upside Down happened when he was just eight years old. He was exploring caves in Nevada and somehow ended up in this other dimension – originally called Dimension X – which was full of creepy creatures all connected to this powerful, shadowy being, what we later know as The Mind Flayer.
Henry gained his powers because he survived exposure to the Abyss, also known as Dimension X. However, this experience fundamentally changed him, altering both his blood and his personality.
Henry was the first person Dr. Brenner experimented on at Hawkins Lab, before Eleven. Ultimately, Eleven defeated Henry, sending him to a strange, otherworldly place that completely changed him. He transformed into Vecna, the villain, who now seeks to connect this dark realm with our world, hoping to reshape everything into his ideal version of perfection.
You can now watch the final season of Stranger Things – volumes 1 and 2 – on Netflix. The very last episode will be available to stream on December 31st.
