Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp Breaks Down the Will’s Powers in Season 5

The show returns after a three-year break, and the creators, the Duffer Brothers, aimed to deliver episodes that fans would love. Expect even more intense challenges for the character Will Byers in this new season.

Throughout the series, Will Byers has consistently faced hardship, serving as a central target for Vecna’s attacks. From being mysteriously lost, forced into secret missions, and feeling abandoned by his friends, he’s never truly had a normal life. Now that all episodes are available, actor Noah Schnapp has revealed that Season 5 will finally explore Will developing his own unique abilities.

Season 5 is delivering a lot of action in its first four episodes, and it’s been full of surprising twists, especially the reveal about Will Byers after he discovers the truth about himself. Actor Noah Schnapp was particularly excited for fans to see this moment, which happens in Episode 4, “Sorcerer.”

The actor explained that the project was kept very confidential. Scripts were typically only given to them a week before rehearsals to prevent leaks.

He remembered learning about the scripts being written the year before, but Shawn Levy and the directors kept him in the dark. They didn’t share much information with him, instead just telling him to be patient and that exciting things were on the way.

Finn Wolfhard said he read the script for Episode 4 the day they rehearsed it. He wanted to be prepared and not stumble over his lines. He was quickly skimming it, and then, while showering, he reached the ending and was shocked by what happened.

He shared that he was living with a helper at the time, and he immediately exclaimed, “Oh my gosh, I have powers!” He was so excited he wanted to tell everyone, but he had to keep it a secret for two years before anyone could see what he meant. He still thought it was the most amazing thing ever.

The Duffer Brothers Explained Will’s Powers

In another interview, the creators of the show, Matt and Ross Duffer, revealed they’ve always been aware of Will’s abilities. Ross Duffer explained that Will and Eleven’s powers are connected and share similarities, but Will has the unique ability to tap into Vecna’s powers.

Matt explained that the character connects with a collective consciousness, allowing him to control anything within it. As the story unfolds, you’ll see the extent of his abilities. This is how he controls the monster, but it also means he can’t affect things outside of that shared consciousness, like simply opening a door.

The pair explained that the powers wouldn’t have emerged if he hadn’t been taken, and if certain other events hadn’t occurred. This is quite different from how Eleven’s abilities developed.

The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 is now available on Netflix. The second part will arrive on December 25th, and the series finale will air on December 31st.
