Eleven makes the choice to stay trapped in the Upside Down to prevent scientists from continuing to exploit her powers and blood.
Brown called the decision “beautiful and cathartic,” explaining she’d been hoping for this outcome for a while. She shared that, growing up, she struggled to express herself, which is why she connected with the character Eleven. She believes this season allows Eleven to finally find her voice and make the most important decision of her life.
Eleven was crucial in the fight against Vecna, demonstrating abilities she’d never used before. Actress Millie Bobby Brown described this as a turning point for her character, suggesting Eleven felt this battle represented a definitive end to something. After a heartbreaking goodbye to Mike, who responds with a scream, Eleven disappears.
The show’s ending doesn’t clearly state whether Eleven is truly gone, leaving her fate uncertain. Mike believes Kali might have used her powers to create an illusion, potentially hiding Eleven somewhere safe. I was really surprised to hear the Duffers explain that Eleven wasn’t ever going to end up just hanging out with the group at the end of the story. Apparently, if she is still out there somewhere, the best her friends can really do is hope she’s okay, because they won’t be able to actually connect with her.
