‘Stranger Things’ Is Over, but Hopper’s Horror Story Isn’t

Spoilers for the Stranger Things series finale are below!

I can’t believe Stranger Things is really over! After watching for almost ten years, it’s so strange to think there won’t be any more new seasons. It became such a huge phenomenon, and I was definitely one of the millions glued to Netflix to see how the story ended. The final season was packed with action – Eleven’s showdown with Vecna was incredible, and there was constant danger in the Upside Down. Honestly, there were some really emotional moments that hit me hard!

Hopper’s story might actually have the saddest ending of any character, even if viewers don’t immediately realize it. Losing Eleven would be devastating for him, especially considering the pain he already felt after losing his daughter. While the show gave Hopper and Joyce a happy moment, there’s a lingering hint that things could still take a dark turn for him in the future.

Hopper Lined up the Wrong Job After ‘Stranger Things’

Netflix

Jim Hopper has faced immense hardship, especially with the illness and loss of his daughter, Sara, which deeply shaped his past. When Eleven came into his life, she became like a daughter to him, and they formed a makeshift family alongside others who needed support. Although Eleven’s presumed death would understandably devastate him, Stranger Things skips over much of his grieving period with a time jump. While the show acknowledges the profound impact of her loss, the creators decided not to focus on Hopper’s sadness and instead moved the story forward towards a more hopeful future.

In one of the final scenes, Hopper shares a heartwarming dinner with Joyce. They’d been a couple for years and had even talked about their future together. He surprises her with a proposal, presenting her with an engagement ring. This happy moment feels well-deserved after everything they’ve been through. However, earlier in the evening, Hopper reveals a friend offered him a job as sheriff in Montauk, hinting at a possible move. While he doesn’t say if he’ll take it, the job suggests an uncertain and potentially difficult future if he does.

The Montauk Conspiracy Inspired ‘Stranger Things’

Netflix

The Montauk Project is a popular conspiracy theory centered around Camp Hero, a former military base in Montauk, New York. It claims the base was secretly used for unusual and controversial experiments during the 1970s and 80s, focusing on things like controlling minds, using psychic abilities in warfare, and even attempting time travel. Some versions of the theory suggest these experiments involved alien technology and the creation of monstrous creatures. Does any of this sound familiar?

Originally, the Duffer brothers proposed Stranger Things under the name “Montauk,” drawing inspiration from the real-life conspiracy theory about Camp Hero. Though the show eventually became Stranger Things and evolved, it still kept links to the supposed Montauk experiments. Hopper’s reference to Montauk is a neat nod to fans familiar with the show’s origins, but it also hints at a troubling possibility: accepting the Montauk sheriff position could lead him into a situation similar to the one in Hawkins Lab.

While the creators probably didn’t originally plan a grim fate for Hopper, it’s now a possibility. If his story continues, it could involve a separate, darker storyline inspired by a real-life conspiracy theory, essentially acting as a kind of unofficial sequel to Stranger Things.
