It seems the team making the newest episodes of Stranger Things may have mixed up some details about the show’s history. After the first part of the fifth and final season was released on Netflix last week, fans pointed out some inconsistencies with things that happened in earlier episodes.
Fans noticed a detail in the show where Winona Ryder’s character, Joyce Byers, states her son went missing at 11, but a missing person poster says he was 12 when he disappeared. Entertainment Weekly also reported that viewers pointed out inconsistencies in how Casa Byers was built, according to Jonathan Byers in Season 2.
Will remembered building Castle Byers with his friend, exactly as they’d planned. “It took forever,” he said, “because you were terrible at hammering – you kept missing the nails! Then it started to rain, but we didn’t stop. We both ended up being sick for almost a week, but we had to finish it, right? We just had to.”
After eight years, a detail about the brothers’ past seems to have been changed. In Season 5, Episode 4, a flashback shows them building Castle Byers on a bright, fall day – not in the rain as originally shown. Dedicated fans quickly noticed this difference.
I noticed a couple of continuity errors in the show, and I wasn’t the only one! Someone pointed out on X that Joyce mistakenly said Will was eleven when he disappeared, but he was actually twelve. They also remembered a scene where Will and Jonathan were building Castle Byers on a bright, sunny day, which doesn’t quite fit with the show’s darker tone and timeline.
One fan pointed out that Jonathan recalled building Castle Byers with Will during a downpour, and they were both sick for a week afterward. They also noted it seemed strange the boys acted so normally on the very day their father left, especially considering the difficult circumstances of the fort’s original construction.
Some viewers see the mistakes in the show Stranger Things as a bad sign, worrying that the final season might have even more errors and ultimately be disappointing. These continuity issues aren’t just frustrating; they’re raising concerns about the show’s future quality.
One fan expressed concern on Reddit that Stranger Things could suffer the same fate as Game of Thrones and other shows with disappointing endings. They pointed to issues like inconsistencies with Holly’s age and changes to Vecna’s history, as well as a feeling that something was off with the Season 4 finale. The fan stressed the importance of a nearly flawless ending, worrying that the current continuity errors might multiply as the show heads towards its final volume and conclusion.
The Duffer Brothers Previously Sparked Anger With 2022’s ‘Birthdaygate’ Error
This isn’t the first time the creators of Stranger Things have faced criticism for minor errors, according to reports. In 2022, they dealt with a controversy called “birthdaygate” after an oversight in Season 4’s “Vecna’s Curse” episode. The episode took place on March 22nd, which had already been established as Will Byers’ birthday. However, the show never actually mentioned his birthday, leading fans to believe his friends and family had forgotten it.
Ross Duffer explained to Variety that the birthday error was a mistake – it seemed like his mom had forgotten his character’s birthday, which was never the intention. He and the team apologized to fans for the oversight.
Volume Two of Stranger Things‘ fifth season is slated to hit Netflix on December 25. on December 31.
