Reason behind Demogorgons’ absence in Stranger Things final battle revealed in new doc

The recent Stranger Things documentary, ‘One Last Adventure,’ explained why Demogorgons weren’t included in the show’s final battle. Even though these creatures were among the most frightening enemies, the creators deliberately chose to leave them out of the confrontation in ‘The Abyss’.

The documentary reveals the decision was made while planning Season 5’s storyline. The Duffer Brothers and their writers considered adding several monsters from the Upside Down, in addition to Vecna and the Mind Flayer. In the documentary, Matt Duffer explains to the writing team that the exciting part of the final battle in The Abyss would be a massive monster – something new for the show.

Later, he described the scene in the MAC-Z as incredibly intense and reaching a peak moment, explaining it was due to six Demos attacking at once. Writer Kate Trefry then expressed concern that audiences might get tired of seeing so many Demos. Ross Duffer acknowledged this was a valid point, agreeing it could be overwhelming. As a result of this discussion, the team ultimately decided to remove the Demogorgons from the final battle entirely.

The Duffer Brothers also pointed out that the story made sense internally. In an interview with ScreenRant, Matt Duffer explained that it didn’t fit for Vecna to use the Demogorgons in the fight. He questioned, “If the Mind Flayer is already such a powerful threat, why would Vecna need the Demos?”
