Even though the final season was controversial, the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things is still considered a remarkable achievement. Now that the show has ended, they are beginning to work on new projects.
Netflix’s new horror series, Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, is a big change of pace from their popular science fiction shows, and it’s already proving to be a hit with critics, earning an 85% approval rating.
Based on 13 reviews, the show is currently receiving mostly positive feedback. This rating may change as more people share their thoughts. Interestingly, it’s already performing better than the latest season of Stranger Things, which received an 82% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating – the lowest score of that series.
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen Is Not Like Stranger Things
The Duffer Brothers recently signed a new deal with Paramount starting in April 2026, but they’re still working on existing projects. One of these is a show called Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which they produced alongside creator and showrunner Haley Z. Boston.
This limited series is a scary, supernatural story, but it’s different from shows like Stranger Things that focus on monsters and other worlds. Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen centers around a bride, Rachel, as she prepares for her wedding and begins to question if her fiancé, Nicky, is the right person for her.
I’m really excited about this new limited series! It stars Camila Morrone as Rachel and Adam DiMarco as Nicky, and the supporting cast is incredible – Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ted Levine, Jeff Wilbusch, Karla Crome, Gus Birney, Sawyer Fraser, and even Zlatko Burić are all involved. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic ensemble!
What Are Critics Saying About Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen?
In a positive review, Nick Levine of NME praised the series, noting that while it occasionally feels reminiscent of Twin Peaks with its unsettling portrayal of small-town life, it’s full of style and unexpected twists.
Richard Roeper of RogerEbert.com highly recommended the series, highlighting its intensely unsettling atmosphere. He noted the show is filled with a sense of dread, achieved through excellent production design, lighting, music, and cinematography. Roeper described the overall effect as feeling constantly like you’re emerging from a nightmare during the gloomy, pre-dawn hours.
I just read a review of the new series, and it sounds like the Duffer Brothers really redeemed themselves after what the reviewer called a disappointing ending to Stranger Things. They called this new show a strong comeback! The reviewer especially loved Camila Morrone’s performance. My only slight concern, according to the review, is that the plot sometimes relies a little too much on predictable events to move things forward, but overall it sounds really good.
The show received mostly positive feedback, with only two negative reviews. One came from Michael Savio at Slant Magazine, who drew comparisons to Rosemary’s Baby, noting both stories focus on transitions – a girl becoming a woman and a woman becoming a mother. He found Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which centers on a woman becoming a bride, to be an enjoyable but somewhat stale series, comparing it to leftover wedding cake.
Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is streaming on Netflix.
