‘Stranger Things’ Creators Shoot Down Hopes of Sequel Series

The story of Stranger Things is officially over, though the world will continue to expand with new shows and projects. However, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have stated they won’t create a sequel bringing back the original cast. While future spin-offs could still feature familiar faces, the Duffers are firm about not simply waiting ten years to revisit these characters in another series.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Duffer talked openly about the potential for a future revival of the show.

Honestly, we don’t have any plans to continue the story. The way we ended the show, with the closing credits and Mike closing the basement door, was meant to signal a definite conclusion – the end of Mike, Eleven, Joyce, and Hopper’s journey. It was always intended as a coming-of-age story, and that’s what it ultimately is. Closing that basement door symbolizes the characters leaving childhood behind and stepping into adulthood.

No “Grandpa Hopper” in ‘Stranger Things’ Future

Since its 2016 release, Stranger Things has been a major focus for its creators. While they aren’t completely leaving the story behind, they’re eager to explore new projects beyond the town of Hawkins, Indiana. The upcoming spin-off, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, will focus on the show’s younger characters. However, Matt Duffer admitted that creating a sequel series feels like an unnecessary money-making venture. He also deliberately avoided hinting at which characters might appear in the live-action spin-off.

Honestly, a sequel focusing on a midlife crisis just doesn’t sound very appealing. (Laughs.) And the idea of bringing Grandpa Hopper back feels like a purely money-making move. I can’t say much about the live-action spin-off yet, but Ross and I are excited to develop new characters and a new backstory while still capturing the feel of Stranger Things. It feels like we wrapped up everything we wanted to say with these characters and the world of the Upside Down in the final season.

This recent news may be upsetting to fans who are sad to see these characters and storylines ending, but it also makes us wonder what Stranger Things even is without them – and without the mysterious Upside Down.
