Stranger Things Creators on if a Sequel Could Happen 10 Years Later

The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, have responded to rumors about what’s next for the show. They explained why they won’t be making another series that directly continues the story of the original characters, even though they could have. They shared their reasons for ending the story at this point, despite the possibility of revisiting the town of Hawkins.

Duffer Brothers on the possibility of a sequel series in future

Matt Duffer recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the story of the original Stranger Things characters is definitively over. He explained they have no plans to revisit the storylines of characters like Mike, Eleven, Joyce, and Hopper, saying, “We’re closing the door on the story.” Duffer emphasized that the show was always meant to be a coming-of-age tale, and that chapter has now come to an end.

Ross Duffer explained that the series finale truly marked the end of the story. He said they’d explored everything they wanted to with these characters, the main storyline, and the mysterious Upside Down. The final credits emphasized that this chapter was definitively closed.

Although the creators, the Duffer Brothers, aren’t planning to continue the story with the original characters, they are building on the world of Stranger Things with new projects. These include a live-action spin-off series and an animated show called Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. Matt Duffer explained that the spin-off will tie into the main story and provide answers to some unresolved mysteries, specifically regarding the strange rock and scientist seen in the final episode.

Matt Duffer explained that the upcoming spinoff will feature a completely original story, different from anything involving the Mind Flayer or the Upside Down. While the original characters won’t be the focus, the show will still capture the same feel as Stranger Things. This signals a move for the creators to develop new characters and stories outside of Hawkins, Indiana.

When asked about the possibility of a sequel with the original characters, Matt Duffer said he wasn’t interested. He suggested it would likely feel forced and uninspired, like a desperate attempt to make more money – for example, portraying Hopper as an elderly man. He doesn’t believe that would be a good direction for the story.
