Stranger Things creators line up all-star cast for retirement home supernatural drama The Boroughs
As a child of the ’80s and a devoted fan of Stranger Things, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgic excitement about the Duffer Brothers’ latest project, The Boroughs. It seems they’ve taken their knack for blending suspenseful storytelling with a love for the past and given us a fresh spin – this time focusing on a group of unlikely heroes in a retirement community.
Matt and Ross Duffer hit it big when they crafted the supernatural drama “Stranger Things” for Netflix. This series, which is set in the 1980s, appears to be a time period that the Duffers hold dear affection for. As we eagerly await the final season of this show, scheduled to air next year, it’s worth noting that the brothers have other projects cooking, such as a new Netflix series titled “The Boroughs.”
The Duffers are set to focus solely on their producing role; the responsibilities for showrunning will be handled by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who were behind the much-lamented series “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance“. Ben Taylor is slated to direct multiple episodes, including the pilot, as reported by “The Hollywood Reporter“.
Despite some changes in characters and setting, The Duffers’ distinctive style is evident in this show, which revolves around a group of underestimated individuals – in this case, residents of a retirement community – who unite to thwart an otherworldly menace that seeks to claim the one resource they lack: time. In Stranger Things, it was children who joined forces to combat an otherworldly peril, while in The Boroughs, it’s the elderly, often overlooked by society.
The series, “The Boroughs”, evokes a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of the 1980s-themed movie, “The Burbs”. Just like Tom Hanks in that film, who battled an otherworldly menace in his suburban neighborhood, “The Boroughs” also presents a seemingly idyllic retirement community hiding sinister secrets. The Duffers’ choice of casting veterans from the 80s is strategic, as they’ve enlisted Geena Davis and Alfred Molina for the show. Geena Davis, known for her roles in ’80s classics like “Beetlejuice” and “The Fly”, as well as ’90s hits such as “A League of Their Own” and “Thelma & Louise”, will be a significant part of “The Boroughs”. Similarly, Alfred Molina, famed for his roles in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” trilogy, the eccentric drug dealer in “Boogie Nights”, and many other iconic films, is also set to appear. I’m excited to see these talented actors confront the Mindflayer or any other mysterious threats that may arise in this series.
In this production, Davis will portray the character Renee, while Molina will take on the role of Sam. Additionally, Bill Pullman (known for his roles in Spaceballs from 1987, which I recently rewatched and still find entertaining, as well as movies like Sleepless in Seattle, Wyatt Earp, and Independence Day) has joined the cast. Alfre Woodard and Denis O’Hare are also part of the ensemble.
There’s no release date for The Boroughs just yet, but color me interested.
