Stranger Things Creators Explain Why [Spoiler] Made the Final Kill

After almost a decade, the popular Netflix series Stranger Things has concluded with its fifth and final season. A major highlight of the finale was the last showdown between the heroes of Hawkins and the villain Vecna. In the end, only one beloved character dealt the final, decisive blow to defeat him.

Why did Joyce get to kill Vecna in Stranger Things?

In the final scene of Stranger Things, Joyce Byers declared, “You messed with the wrong family,” and then decisively defeated Vecna by chopping off his head with an ax.

The Duffer Brothers spent a lot of time figuring out who should defeat Vecna. Ultimately, they decided it made the most sense for Joyce, played by Winona Ryder, to be the one to do it.

The Duffers (Ross Duffer spoke to Netflix’s Tudum) discussed who should ultimately defeat Vecna, considering all their options. They ultimately decided on Joyce because she was the first character to recognize something was wrong back in season one and actively try to do something about it. They felt her strong love for Will, her family, and friends was a powerful force, making her the most fitting choice to take down Vecna.

Joyce has always been linked to axes, ever since the first season of the show. The creators, the Duffer brothers, revealed she’d held one before, but never actually used it to defeat a monster – until the final episode of Season 5.

Ross Duffer explained that they wanted Eleven to finally use the axe she first had in Season 1. While she swung at the Demogorgon earlier in the season, they wanted a moment where she actually used it effectively. After nine years, they felt it would be satisfying for viewers to see her use the axe and defeat a monster.

The Stranger Things Season 5 finale is now streaming on Netflix.
