‘Stranger Things’ Creators Discuss the Truth Behind the Upside Down

Spoilers Ahead for Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2

With only one episode remaining in Stranger Things Season 5, a huge twist has left fans stunned. It’s been revealed that the Upside Down, which has haunted Hawkins since the beginning, is actually a wormhole leading to another dimension – currently called the Abyss. This chaotic dimension is where Vecna and his Demogorgons truly live, and he plans to combine it with Earth to create his idea of a perfect world. The creators of the hit Netflix show have now explained how and when they first came up with this origin story for the Upside Down.

The Duffer brothers recently told Collider about the final part of Stranger Things Season 5 and how it explains the origins of the Upside Down. They’d had the big reveal planned for a decade, but Netflix asked them to fully flesh out the rules of this alternate dimension while they were still working on the very first season. As Matt Duffer explained…

Looking back, it’s funny. The show definitely wasn’t always focused on the Upside Down’s origins. That whole mythology really started taking shape around the middle of Season 1. Netflix was eager to understand it, even though we, the writers, felt it was way too early to dive in. Honestly, it was a bit frustrating. I remember thinking, ‘I just don’t have the bandwidth to create the entire backstory of that dimension right now!’ We wanted to build the story more organically, but they were really pushing for details upfront.

It was actually a good thing because it made us really define what our project was all about, working closely with our writers. We’ve been keeping those details secret for about ten years, so finally being able to reveal them to our fans feels like a huge weight off our shoulders.

More to come.
