Stranger Things 5 releasing in 2025 is a "safe bet," says Gaten Matarazzo

As a dedicated Stranger Things fan who has been following this incredible series since its inception, I can confidently say that the wait for season 5 has been excruciatingly long. However, the anticipation is palpable as we gear up for the final installment of our beloved Hawkins saga.

Fans of Stranger Things have been accustomed to waiting for new episodes, but the anticipation for season five, which marks the end of the series, has proven exceptionally challenging. This season has faced numerous setbacks, primarily due to industry-wide writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023, which significantly affected filming schedules. Fortunately, production is now well underway, and it’s hoped that the final episode will air sometime in 2025.

Filming for the final season commenced in January and is anticipated to conclude anywhere between December 2024 and January 2025, which suggests the production could stretch on for more than a year. In recent times, members of the cast have hinted at an emotional conclusion for the series, while also acknowledging the challenge of creating a fitting finale. Regarding when fans can anticipate watching new episodes on Netflix, star Gaten Matarazzo suggests 2025 might be a reliable prediction. “The intention is definitely for people to see it next year,” he told The Direct. “That’s our aim. However, there are always obstacles in making a season, especially one as grand as this one. So there are no guarantees, but I think next year is a reasonable assumption.

The rest of the town, obviously, [are] now finally well aware that some sh-t is going down…I think it’s the same, like, vibe we know and love about this gang and getting on their adventures and, of course, the ultimate goal of stopping all this and preventing the Upside Down from infiltrating. But in the context of some pretty serious blows to the group. Of course, Dustin suffered a pretty serious loss at the end of four, and you witnessed the death of a really, really close friend…

If the series is set to debut in 2026, it implies that a span of three years has elapsed since season 4 was aired. In this duration, several main cast members have matured from adolescence into adulthood. There’s no doubt about it – they are definitely not kids anymore!

Stranger Things 5 has a “satisfying” ending

Towards the close of Stranger Things season 4, the terrifying Upside Down started seeping into peaceful Hawkins, Indiana. Furthermore, Vecna’s danger remains imminent. The season certainly left us hanging. Get ready for an epic showdown in the finale. And undoubtedly, a heart-wrenching conclusion.

When NME inquired about the series finale, Matarazzo shared his viewpoint on why it will please fans. He stated, “The manner in which our shows have unfolded, the seasons have developed, the approach to this last one seems like the masterplan Matt [Duffer] and Ross [Duffer] have been envisioning all along. It feels like a very fulfilling way to wrap things up and provide a definitive conclusion.

Matarazzo also weighed in on the final season to The Hollywood Reporter:

The one consistency of this show is that it just grows every year in scale and size and in the message that they want to bring. So this season is not different in the slightest, and I knew that they had prepped that, initially. They said, ‘Hey, this one is going to be really, really big. We’re not going to candy-coat it: it’s a full year shoot.’ And that led to a big reaction of, like, ‘Oh, so we’re really going for it.’ So we have been [going for it] and we still are.

The series finale will doubtless be a tear-jerker. Prepare yourselves, folks! In the meantime, we can all head back to Hawkins for Stranger Things seasons 1 through 4.
