Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio recently revealed more about their upcoming game, Stranger Than Heaven, during an Xbox presentation. Launching this winter for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, this new title explores the beginnings of the Tojo Clan and serves as a prequel to the Like a Dragon series. Previously known as Project Century, the game moves away from the modern setting of Kamurocho to tell a multi-generational story. It will be available on Xbox Game Pass starting on day one.

The story follows Makoto Daito, a young boy of Japanese descent fleeing hardship in San Francisco in 1915. He secretly boards a ship heading to his mother’s home, beginning a 50-year adventure. As players guide Daito, they’ll experience five different periods in modern Japanese history, starting in the industrial city of Fukuoka and later exploring the bustling streets of Shinjuku in 1965. This broad timeframe provides a fascinating look at how Japan changed, moving from a focus on heavy industry to the vibrant entertainment culture it’s known for today.

The combat in this game is raw and impactful, featuring a unique system where you control each of Daito’s limbs separately. This allows for intuitive blocking with one hand and powerful counterattacks with the other. This intense, realistic fighting style is balanced by a surprising twist: Daito can also become a music producer. Players will collect sounds from the game world – like train noises and enemy cries – to create original music tracks and find performers to put on concerts across the country. The game blends brutal street fighting with the excitement of the music industry.

This project boasts an impressive international cast. Hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg plays a smuggler named Orpheus, alongside his son Cordell Broadus as ‘The Veiled Stranger.’ Japanese singer Ado and Grammy winner Tori Kelly perform the official theme song, while Yu Shirota voices the main character. The creators also secured the rights to use the likeness of the late yakuza film star Bunta Sugawara for a character named Genzo Iwaki. By blending historical storytelling with famous faces, this highly anticipated release hopes to set a new standard for the studio and build on its already strong reputation.
