Strange Darling, The Crow, and Blink Twice among 8 scary movies releasing this week

As a seasoned horror enthusiast who’s seen more slashers than I care to remember, this upcoming week is shaping up to be a blood-curdling delight! With the highly-anticipated “Strange Darling” and Bill Skarsgard’s “The Crow”, it feels like Halloween came early.

A surprisingly stacked week for new horror movies is ahead of us! Three films hit theaters, including the highly-anticipated and acclaimed film Strange Darling from writer and director JT Mollner along with the Bill Skarsgard-led The Crow and psychological thriller Blink Twice.

Besides “Longlegs,” which is debuting on VOD, there are several other movies arriving. Also, the final episode of “Evil” will air this Thursday on Paramount+.

Art of a Hit (VOD, Aug. 20)

The movie titled “Art of a Hit” is categorized as a “rock horror” film, depicting a band struggling to rekindle their past success. Ryan Donowho plays the lead vocalist who receives an offer from a renowned producer to produce a new album at an ancient French chateau. However, their creative process doesn’t last long before they realize that their internal conflicts are overshadowed by far more pressing concerns.

Stream (VOD, Aug. 21)

In this rephrased version, the movie titled Stream appears to promise a thrilling and chilling experience as it brings together popular horror figures such as Danielle Harris, Tony Todd, David Howard Thornton, Dee Wallace, among others. The plot follows a family who, unbeknownst to them, find themselves trapped in a hotel that serves as a macabre stage for a lethal game. Their survival hinges on navigating a series of sadistic challenges.

Hell Hole (Shudder Original, Aug. 23)

The movie-making clan behind the film “Hellbender” is back with their newest production – a gruesome beast tale. This time, it centers around a group working in the untamed Serbian wilderness who, unknowingly, drill into an old pocket filled with a parasitic creature. The monster wreaks havoc on the entire facility as a result.

The Crow (Theaters, Aug. 23)

The intricate heritage of “The Crow” makes its comeback on August 23, with Bill Skarsgaard stepping into the lead character. This new film falls under the genre of dark fantasy, where a musician who was murdered seeks revenge for his own death and that of his fiancée, portrayed by FKA Twigs in this installment. This will mark the fifth movie within the “The Crow” series.

Strange Darling (Theaters, Aug. 23)

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t wait to catch “Strange Darling” this Friday in select theaters. Starring Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner, this critically acclaimed psychological thriller unfolds the chilling tale of a serial killer whose casual fling triggers a murderous rampage. To get the full impact, it’s best to go into the movie knowing as little as possible. Trust me, it’s worth it!

Blink Twice (Theaters, Aug. 23)

In her first directorial effort, Zoë Kravitz teams up with E.T. Feigenbaum for the screenplay of “Blink Twice“, a gripping psychological thriller. This production features Zoë’s real-life partner Channing Tatum in the cast. The story revolves around a waitress who encounters a tech billionaire and journeys to his secluded island, but events take a dark turn when one of her friends mysteriously vanishes.

Hostile Dimensions (VOD, Aug. 23)

Two documentarians delve into the alleged vanishing act of a street artist, leading them on a chilling, multidimensional odyssey. Along this path, they uncover a shocking revelation.

Longlegs (VOD, Aug. 23)

As a long-time horror film enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of chilling flicks, I can confidently say that “Longlegs,” Neon’s mega-successful serial killer horror film, is one you don’t want to miss. Starring the always captivating Nicolas Cage and the rising talent Maika Monroe, this movie has left audiences on the edge of their seats with its gripping plot and intense performances.
