Storm Reid confirms 'Euphoria' exit: 'I'm so glad that that's a part of my legacy'

As a seasoned movie critic with a keen eye for emerging talent and a penchant for gritty dramas, I must say that Storm Reid‘s departure from “Euphoria” leaves me both intrigued and a tad melancholic. Having followed her career since her breakout role in “A Wrinkle in Time,” it is fascinating to witness the evolution of this young actress as she navigates the complexities of higher education, dramatic arts, and African American studies at the esteemed University of Southern California.

According to The Times, it’s been confirmed that Storm Reid won’t be part of Season 3 of HBO’s hard-hitting teen series “Euphoria.

Earlier this week, it was revealed by the actor who portrayed Gia Bennett on the Emmy-winning show, that her character won’t make an appearance in the long-awaited third season.

The actor who won an Emmy for “The Last of Us” expressed great enthusiasm about Season 3 to Rotten Tomatoes at the Governors Awards on Monday. Regrettably, Gia won’t be back for the third season, but the cast and crew of that show, as well as HBO, hold a significant debt of gratitude within me. “Euphoria” is truly unique, and I’m grateful to have been associated with such a culturally influential series.

She expressed her heartfelt gratitude and feeling of eternal obligation, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Season 3. Her excitement was palpable as she concluded.

21-year-old actress who played the lead in “A Wrinkle in Time” chose not to elaborate on her decision to step away, and her representatives have yet to respond to The Times’ request for a statement as of Wednesday. Similarly, HBO representatives declined to comment when approached by The Times on the same day.

Actress from “Euphoria,” Gia, is attending the University of Southern California, focusing on Dramatic Arts as her major and African American Studies as her minor. In the show, she portrayed the troubled younger sister to Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, in a drama series that delves into Rue’s battles with substance abuse, infidelity, scandals, and other mature themes affecting her high school companions. During Season 2, Gia was mostly kept on the sidelines but had a tense exchange with their mother (Nika King).

The TV show “Euphoria,” featuring Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Hunter Schafer, premiered in June 2019. After two special episodes, season 2 started airing in January 2022, winning Zendaya her second straight Emmy for best lead actress. The series was renewed for another season in February 2022, before the finale that showed Rue’s life spiraling out of control had even aired.

Season 3 has been temporarily paused due to Sam Levinson assuming directing responsibilities for the problematic HBO series, “The Idol.” Additionally, delays were caused by the writers’ and actors’ strikes last year, pushing back Season 3 even further. If it airs next year as expected, it will mark a six-year gap since the debut of Season 1.

In the interim, Zendaya, Sweeney, and Elordi’s careers have soared as they embarked on more prominent roles while the production was paused. Rumors of backstage tension, conflicts between Zendaya and Levinson, a cast member departure (Barbie Ferreira), and the passing of actor Angus Cloud raised doubts about the upcoming season.

According to recent updates, it’s been confirmed that filming for the upcoming series on HBO/Max is expected to commence in early 2025. Previously, the head of HBO/Max, Casey Bloys, stated that the project remains on schedule to begin production in January. Fortunately, the individual schedules of the series’ main stars won’t clash during filming.

At a recent press gathering, he announced that they’re currently working on “Euphoria”. He mentioned a tentative start date around mid to late January. There were some rumors sparked by an online post, but everything remains the same. They are indeed filming the season. He has read the scripts and everyone involved is content. The project continues to progress smoothly.

Bloys further added that “every actor featured in the series,” without explicitly discussing the departures of Reid or Ferreira.

Although the series is currently garnering much interest due to its production of bona fide film celebrities and their ongoing projects, rest assured that filming for this season is underway, which means business as usual – we’re looking at eight episodes.

The actors Sweeney, Schafer, Elordi, Colman Domingo, Eric Dane, Maude Apatow, and Dominic Fike have all expressed their willingness to reprise their roles in the upcoming season. Additionally, both Zendaya and Elordi have suggested that a time leap might be incorporated into the new season, considering the significant gap between Seasons 2 and 3.

In a chat with Elle during the summer of 2023, Levinson referred to the upcoming sequel as a “film noir” and hinted that Zendaya’s character would provide a platform for delving into the concept of being an upright person amidst a morally decaying society.
