Stop Killing Games hit 1.4 million signatures, but there’s still one more risk ahead
With approximately 1.4 million signatures, our aim now is to continue collecting signatures and persistently urge the European Commission for action.
Stop Killing Games recently hit a significant milestone, with the number of supporters jumping from 1 million to 1.4 million in just two weeks. At first, Ross “Accursed Farms” Scott, the petition’s creator, found it challenging to generate interest. However, things took off when disagreements between him and Jason “Thor” Hall (also known as Pirate Software) ignited a wave of online conversation.
As a passionate supporter, I’m rallying my fellow advocates to aim higher than just the 1 million verified signatures required for Accursed Farms’ petition. We want to push towards 1.2 million and ideally up to 1.4 million signatures. This extra cushion will help ensure that any potential invalid entries won’t jeopardize our cause. With our current numbers, it seems likely that the European Commission will take notice and move forward with a review of this petition. Let’s work together to make a significant impact!
Despite this win, Accursed Farms still encourages fans to continue signing up. He stated in his latest post that the only circumstance under which it might not get approved is if there was widespread botnet spoofing earlier in time. Therefore, more people signing on continues to be beneficial.
Many supporters have voiced similar apprehensions. Although the speed at which names are being collected appears genuine, it’s challenging to confirm this fully. For now, the best course of action seems to be continuing to spread the message widely.
How many more signatures does Stop Killing Games need?
There’s no fixed number beyond the 1 million minimum, but more signatures help for two key reasons:
- Relevancy: A high signature count shows strong public interest, which increases the chances that the EU Commission takes the initiative seriously.
- Fake sign protection: “Botnet spoofing” refers to fake, automated entries meant to harm a petition or inflate numbers through illegitimate means. Accursed Farms wants to make sure the final number can withstand validation.
With over 400,000 extra signatures, the odds look good. However, playing it safe is still wise.
In a recent conversation with The Act Man, Accursed Farms urged supporters to share news about them in various languages. Now that this campaign has made its way into politics, it’s more than just a matter concerning video games. It represents an opportunity for gamers worldwide to advocate for legislation that guarantees continued access to games, even when developers stop providing online support.
