The popular animated film Monster House, produced by Amblin Entertainment, will be available to stream on Hulu next month. This marks its return to the service twenty years after its initial release in cinemas.
Hulu’s new releases for April include the animated film Monster House, which will be available starting April 1st. Originally released in theaters on July 21, 2006, this movie blends spooky horror with comedy. It was a financial success, grossing over $141 million with a $75 million budget, and received positive reviews, including nominations for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature.
Monster House Is a Gem of an Animated Horror/Comedy Film
Gil Kenan, who recently directed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, also directed Monster House. The screenplay was a collaborative effort between Dan Harmon (co-creator of Rick and Morty and Community), Rob Schrab (The Sarah Silverman Program), and Pamela Pettler (Corpse Bride). The film features voice performances by Mitchel Musso (Hannah Montana), Sam Lerner (The Goldbergs), and Spencer Locke (Resident Evil).
The movie boasts a fantastic cast, including well-known actors like Kathleen Turner (known for Serial Mom), Steve Buscemi (Reservoir Dogs), Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Deuce), Kevin James (King of Queens), Nick Cannon (Wild ‘n Out), Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), Jason Lee (My Name Is Earl), Fred Willard (Everybody Loves Raymond), and Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice).
In Monster House, DJ notices something strange about the house next door, owned by an old man. He and his friends, Chowder and Jenny, soon discover the house is actually alive and dangerous, actively trying to scare away anyone who gets near. The kids bravely decide to investigate, learning a sad story behind the house’s spooky behavior.
Will There Be a Monster House Sequel?
A video game and comic book were released alongside the original Monster House film in 2006. Despite this, no sequels or spin-offs have been created since. Director Gil Kenan mentioned in 2024 that he would be interested in revisiting the world of Monster House, but there are currently no firm plans to do so.
I absolutely adore that movie, and ever since seeing it, I’ve been searching for another animated film with a similar feel and atmosphere. It’s funny, I haven’t really thought about revisiting that story myself over the years. What really struck me about it was how complete the story felt. To me, the only good reason to revisit a film series is if the characters are compelling, and that’s definitely true here. Plus, I’ve stayed really close with a lot of the actors from that movie, especially the younger ones. It’s been incredible watching them grow up and seeing all their success!
Monster House starts streaming on Hulu on Apr. 1, 2026.
