Steven Spielberg & Tom Cruise’s $603M Sci-Fi Hit Officially Releases On Hulu After Making 4x Its Budget

Get ready for a sci-fi takeover on Hulu! The popular movie starring Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise now has a confirmed release date.

Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise continue to be a fantastic creative team. Spielberg is one of the most acclaimed directors ever, and Cruise is arguably the world’s biggest movie star. After releasing The Fabelmans in 2022, Spielberg is preparing to launch Disclosure Day this summer, marking his return to science fiction. However, their earlier sci-fi collaboration from the early 2000s remains a significant achievement.

I’m so excited! One of my favorite sci-fi films, War of the Worlds, which brought together the director and star of Minority Report again, is coming to Hulu! It’ll be available starting May 1st, so the wait isn’t long at all. I can’t wait to watch it again!

Spielberg’s film War of the Worlds, based on H.G. Wells’ classic 1898 novel, features Tom Cruise as Ray, a father fighting to protect his family during an alien invasion. The movie, with co-stars Dakota Fanning, Tim Robbins, Miranda Otto, and Justin Chatwin, was a huge commercial hit, earning over $603 million globally from a $132 million production cost.

Overall, the movie was well-received. It currently has a 76% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, earning it a “Certified Fresh” designation. However, audiences weren’t as impressed, giving it a score of only 42% on the site.

These scores are noticeably lower than those for Minority Report, which received an 89% approval rating from critics and an 80% rating from audiences. While Minority Report earned $358 million at the box office, it wasn’t a massive blockbuster. However, considering its $102 million budget, it was still a very successful film.

Spielberg and Cruise made two successful films together, but they haven’t worked on a project since. Cruise dedicated himself to the Mission: Impossible series, and Spielberg directed acclaimed movies such as Lincoln (2012), Bridge of Spies (2015), The Post (2017), Ready Player One (2018), West Side Story (2021), and The Fabelmans (2022).

Both filmmakers have new movies releasing this year. Steven Spielberg’s film, Disclosure Day, starring Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor, arrives in theaters on June 12th. It appears to tell the story of a subtle alien invasion of Earth, one that isn’t immediately obvious or violent.

I’m really intrigued by Tom Cruise’s upcoming film, Digger, hitting theaters October 2nd. It’s directed by the incredibly talented Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and Cruise plays a fascinating character – a super-rich oil tycoon who accidentally creates a global crisis and then has to fix it. Honestly, after so many years of Cruise primarily doing action films, this feels like a really interesting and unexpected turn for him. It’s a role that seems to demand a lot more than just physical prowess, and I’m eager to see what he does with it.

Whether Disclosure Day and Digger will be popular with viewers is still unknown. However, with War of the Worlds now available on Hulu, it’s a great time to look back at this classic film and a key moment in the careers of both Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise. It’s uncertain if the two will collaborate again, but another project together would definitely be a big deal.
