Director Steven Spielberg has achieved EGOT status, meaning he’s won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award – the four biggest honors in entertainment. He recently earned his Grammy for producing the Disney+ documentary Music by John Williams, which won Best Music Film at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, completing his collection.
The documentary Music by John Williams explores the life and career of the legendary composer behind some of cinema’s most famous scores. Known for his work on franchises like Star Wars, Superman, and Harry Potter, Williams has a particularly strong connection with director Steven Spielberg, having composed the music for hits like Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and the Indiana Jones films. It’s a fitting tribute that Spielberg recently won a Grammy for a film celebrating Williams and his incredible contributions to the art of filmmaking.
Laurent Bouzereau, Sara Bernstein, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Meredith Kaulfers, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Justin Wilkes, and John Williams won Grammys for The Music of John Williams. It won over other nominated recordings, including those by Devo, Live At The Royal Albert Hall, Relentless, and Piece by Piece.
What other awards has Steven Spielberg won?
Steven Spielberg recently achieved EGOT status by winning a Grammy. But what awards had he already won? Over his incredible 50+ year film career, Spielberg has twice been named Best Director, first for Saving Private Ryan and then for Schindler’s List, which also won Best Picture. He’s been nominated for many awards overall, and actually holds the record for the most Best Picture nominations with 14.
Interestingly, Steven Spielberg has won more Emmy Awards than Oscars. He’s earned four Emmys for producing shows like Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Taken, and even A Pinky & the Brain Christmas. He also received a Tony Award in 2022 for producing the musical A Strange Loop.
John Williams is a highly decorated composer with five Oscars – two more than his colleague Steven Spielberg. He’s also won three Emmys and an incredible 27 Grammys, recently adding another for his album, The Music of John Williams. While he hasn’t yet won a Tony Award, Williams could easily compose for a Broadway show and achieve EGOT status – joining the exclusive group of entertainers who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony, like Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, Viola Davis, and Elton John.
