Steve Toussaint reflects on House of the Dragon success in PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive issue
As a lifelong connoisseur of cinema, I must say that the recent recognition of Steve Toussaint as one of People’s Sexy Men is nothing short of delightful. Having spent decades immersed in the world of performances, it’s always heartening to see an actor like him, who has not only honed his craft over time but also managed to weather the storm of prejudice and adversity with grace and dignity.
For four decades, PEOPLE Magazine has been designating the Sexiest Man Alive, a title steeped in custom and thus considered factual by many. This year, the magazine has chosen John Krasinski from The Office as the recipient, yet PEOPLE doesn’t limit its recognition to just one. In fact, they honor 100 sexy men, refraining from ranking them to maintain a touch of elegance. So, gentlemen, you’re all the second sexiest man alive. Don’t worry about it too much.
Anyone, PEOPLE has designated House of the Dragon star Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon) as one of these sexy men, and interviewed him about the show. Overall, the 59-year-old actor seems beyond grateful to be working on the Game of Thrones prequel series. “You get to work with people that you have seen and admired, like for example Eve Best who plays my wife. We just became such good friends and she’s just a great actress and a great person to work with, but suddenly there’s Paddy Considine, there’s Matt Smith and I know who they are and they are really lovely people. I think that’s it, that feeling when you get up in the morning and go, ‘Oh yeah I’ve got to go to work with these great people,’ that’s been the joy of it.”
Toussaint finds himself in such delight with his experience, he doesn’t utter a single complaint regarding the intricate wigs the show is renowned for. As he put it, “Most people wearing wigs usually spend quite some time getting ready,” but for him, that’s not an issue since he naturally sports a bald head and his beard is authentic. He often cautions actors who claim tasks are challenging, but considering the circumstances, he notes, we aren’t venturing into mines.
Steve Toussaint remembers early, racist reactions to his casting on House of the Dragon
Initially, when the series “House of the Dragon” commenced, actor Toussaint faced some unfavorable responses from viewers who were taken aback that a Black man was cast as Corlys Velaryon, a significant character in the Valyrian Freehold and one of the wealthiest individuals during the show’s timeline. Needless to say, this wasn’t an enjoyable experience. Recalling the incident, Toussaint stated, “People accused me of seeing racism where there isn’t any, but if someone calls me a derogatory racial slur, I believe that qualifies as racist, and I have been accustomed to dealing with it throughout my life.
Idris Elba is a friend of mine and when he joined the Marvel universe, he received some of that. I worked with John Boyega and when he was the first face you saw in the reboot of Star Wars, he received some of that. The black [Little Mermaid], the Lord of the Rings TV thing.. it’s there.
It’s wonderful to note that after the premiere of House of the Dragon in 2022, as more viewers got a glimpse of Toussaint’s contributions, the negative racial comments subsided. Interestingly, when the show debuted, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive and approving. In fact, there have been numerous compliments on social media from people who initially had doubts but now express their admiration, saying, “I really enjoy what you did.
If you watched it and didn’t like it, that’s fine, that’s your prerogative but like I said there are shows that I have watched and I don’t particularly like, I just don’t feel the need to go on social media and attack the person in them. As we’ve been going around the world promoting it, it’s been all love and positivity, I’m so happy to be a part of it.
Steve Toussaint is grateful he joined House of the Dragon when he did
Toussaint’s excitement is impossible to hide, even after his lengthy career in the arts. He appears to have struck a good balance, yet he ponders if he would have reacted similarly if he had landed this opportunity earlier in his career, when fame might have had a stronger pull on him. “I’m just an ordinary person involved in that production,” he stated. “I don’t feel famous.” He enjoys being able to carry out his work and return home.
To be in one of the biggest shows in the world at this stage in my journey is perfect for me because I’ve been around the block a few times. Had this happened to me at 21 or 22, I might have been a horrendous person. I have seen the people who have gone up there and come back down again. I’m just enjoying the ride while it lasts.
The TV series “House of the Dragon” has only two seasons left until it concludes its run. Production on the third season is currently ongoing, with an estimated release date around 2026.
