Steve Coogan reveals his ‘antipathy for the British flag’

Steve Coogan, known for playing Alan Partridge, has become an Irish citizen and stated he dislikes the British flag.

As a lifestyle expert, I often encounter people with strong ties to multiple places, and this comedian is a perfect example! Though he grew up in Greater Manchester, just like his dad, he truly considers Ireland his home. It’s fascinating how we define ‘home,’ isn’t it? It’s clearly more than just a birthplace for him – it’s where he feels most connected.

Coogan, age 60, identifies as part of the Irish diaspora and explains he’s always had a slight dislike for the British flag, despite being raised with it.

It’s not about disliking it, but rather keeping a distance from those in power due to past experiences.

This week sees the release of a compelling new film, ‘Saipan,’ where an actor portrays Mick McCarthy, the former manager of the Irish football team. The movie recounts the dramatic conflict between McCarthy and star player Roy Keane during the 2002 World Cup in Japan.

Stephen Coogan’s family roots are in Ireland – his mother was from County Mayo, and his grandparents were Irish – making him eligible for an Irish passport, a fact he playfully points out offers certain perks.

I figured having an Irish passport would make me a less likely target for beheading if captured by ISIS, and that’s why I decided to get one.

You know, I’ve always had a bit of an interesting relationship with Ireland. I was born in England, but I’ve spent so many summers there that it feels like home – almost like I live somewhere in the Irish Sea! It’s funny, because even when I was in Ireland, people would playfully ask me when I was coming ‘home,’ which always struck me as a bit odd, considering my roots are actually across the water.

He explained that he came of age during the Troubles, a time when Irish people in Britain faced widespread suspicion. He was also keenly aware of the complex political landscape, including the history of colonization, the Irish Nationalist movement, and issues surrounding civil liberties.

After being asked to leave Royal Lodge at Windsor and with reports of a strained relationship with his daughter, Princess Eugenie, Prince Andrew might understandably be feeling down this winter.

However, his brother has an event that might appeal.

King Charles is hosting a wellbeing workshop at his Highgrove estate next month. For £75 per person, attendees can participate in a guided meditation designed to promote relaxation and mental clarity. Organizers describe the afternoon as a chance to unwind, recharge, and gently embrace the arrival of spring.

Sparkling start for Marco Pierre’s boy

Marco Pierre White’s oldest son, Luciano, likely had a difficult 2025. His restaurant in Surrey was forced to close due to £100,000 in unpaid taxes, and his brother, Marco Jr., received a prison sentence of over three years for committing several burglaries.

Happily, this year has begun on a much happier note.

I’m so thrilled to share some wonderful news! Luciano, who’s 32, has gotten engaged to Stephanie Beard, the amazing woman behind Silked London. Stephanie, 35, has built a fantastic clothing brand – you might even have seen her designs on stars like Eva Longoria and Cat Deeley! It’s just lovely.

The Duke of Kent, whose wife Katharine died last year, is seeking solace in music.

Reports say the 90-year-old Duke attended a performance by renowned pianist Dame Imogen Cooper at Wigmore Hall in London on Sunday. Dame Imogen, 76, is planning to retire soon after a remarkable 60-year career.

The duke, a relative of Queen Elizabeth, and his wife both enjoyed music. His wife, known as ‘Mrs. Kent’ at the school where she taught in East Hull, commuted there by train from Kensington Palace. She once mentioned in an interview that she particularly liked rap, especially the music of Eminem.

New generation of racy royals?

Rachael Blackmore made history as the first female jockey to win the Grand National. Following her victory, Queen Camilla visited her stables, and Blackmore now believes the Queen’s children will be inspired to become jockeys themselves.

The jockey believes that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis will all be involved in racing when they’re older, in some capacity. He’s confident that the three young royals, aged 12, 10, and 7 respectively, will participate in the sport eventually.

Rachael, who organizes Ladies’ Day at the Cheltenham Festival each March, believes the younger royals will likely attend the event when they’re older. She says Cheltenham is a top sporting event in the UK and expects they’ll want to experience it as teenagers.

Pete Townshend, the 80-year-old musician, thinks it’s more difficult to be a young man than a young woman today. He feels young men aren’t valued enough and often hide their feelings. He suggests they turn to sports to prove their worth, but are then expected to endure physical pain without complaint.

Birthday Button’s burlesque treat

Former Formula 1 champion Jenson Button retired from racing last year to focus on his family, but he continues to enjoy an exciting and active lifestyle.

I heard that Matthew Button celebrated his 46th birthday by seeing Dita Von Teese perform in Las Vegas.

He was joined by his wife, Brittny, age 35, who turned heads in a vibrant pink corset dress, almost matching Dita’s style. Originally from California, Brittny previously worked as a Playboy model. She and her husband met in 2016, married in California, and have two children: a six-year-old son named Hendrix and a four-year-old daughter named Lenny.
