Steve Coogan lands next lead movie role in real-life Irish drama
As a die-hard fan of both football and British humor, I can hardly contain my excitement about Steve Coogan’s upcoming roles! The news that he will play Mick McCarthy in “Saipan,” an Irish drama based on real events leading to Ireland’s World Cup campaign in 2002, has me eagerly awaiting its release. As a football enthusiast who still remembers the Saipan incident and the media storm it caused, I am confident that Coogan will bring his exceptional acting skills to portray this iconic moment in Irish history.
Steve Coogan has landed his next lead movie role in real-life Irish drama Saipan.
The movie, helmed by acclaimed directors Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, is set to portray the series of events that transpired during Ireland’s preparations for the 2002 Football World Cup tournament.
The Saipan controversy involved a heated verbal clash between team leader Roy Keane and coach Mick McCarthy during Ireland’s training camp prior to the Japan tournament.
Keane’s departure from the squad due to the dispute sparked differing views among the Irish public.
1. The strained relationship between the duo and the whirlwind of controversy it sparked will serve as the central theme in the upcoming film, penned by Paul Fraser.
Coogan will portray McCarthy in the upcoming project, while Éanna Hardwicke from “The Sixth Commandment” is cast as Keane.
1) “Filming will start this coming summer in both Ireland and Saipan. The movie should hit theaters in the summer of 2025.”
D’Sa and Leyburn expressed their excitement in a statement about collaborating with an exceptional cast and creative team to narrate a significant episode in Irish football history. This event stirred up conflict across the nation, disrupting its aspirations, dreams, and self-image, and for a brief moment, a small Pacific island became globally renowned due to it.
Regarding Coogan, he’s hopped aboard the illustrious crew of The Sandman for its upcoming second season on Netflix.
As a passionate gamer and avid fan of comic books, I was thrilled when Neil Gaiman’s masterpiece graced our screens in 2022. The moment it premiered on the streaming service, it instantly captured our hearts and minds. Three short months later, we were overjoyed to hear that it had been renewed for another season. What a fantastic journey it has been!
As per Tudum, I’ll be stepping into the role of Barnabas, the pooch pal of the Prodigal sibling from the Endless universe. Can’t wait to embark on this adventure!
In addition to Jack Gleeson and Clive Russell from “Game of Thrones,” Freddie Fox from “Slow Horses,” Ann Skelly and Douglas Booth from “The Nevers,” he will be working with a number of newcomers.
Saipan is expected to be released in summer 2025.
