Stephen Nedoroscik, pommel-horse hero of the Paris Olympics, gets a new stage: 'DWTS'

As a gymnastics enthusiast who has followed the sport for years, I am thrilled to see Stephen Nedoroscik, the charming “pommel horse guy” from the Paris Olympics, stepping into the spotlight on “Dancing with the Stars.” His life experience and athletic prowess will undoubtedly bring a unique perspective to the dance floor.

Gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik, having recently won several medals and garnered online popularity as the “pommel horse champion” during the Paris Olympics, is now chasing another accolade: the Mirrorball Trophy.

Nadir will join other famous personalities as they showcase their dancing skills on “Dancing With the Stars” when the popular dance contest series comes back this fall. Nadir expressed his excitement about enjoying his upcoming limelight in primetime television.

He shared with “Good Morning America” on Thursday that he intends to incorporate some elements of gymnastics into the dance competition, suggesting a backflip or a handstand might be included.

25-year-old, a two-time bronze medalist in gymnastics, is set to be the first male gymnast to appear on “Dancing with the Stars”. Ever since its launch, the show has highlighted female Olympic gymnasts such as Nastia Liukin, Mary Lou Retton, and Laurie Hernandez. Notable gymnasts like Simone Biles, a record-breaking gymnast, and her teammate Suni Lee, who garnered several medals at the 2024 Olympics, are also former contestants on “DWTS”.

During the Paris Olympics, Nedoroscik became well-known in two ways online. In the initial week of the Games, the pommel horse specialist gained virality as people marveled at how he stayed occupied – cheering for his teammates, carrying bags, and seemingly taking naps – while waiting for his turn in the men’s team final.

Later, Nedoroscik executed an almost perfect pommel horse performance, which significantly contributed to Team USA winning the bronze medal – marking the first Olympic victory for the U.S. men since 2008. Immediately online, this spectacled competitor was frequently likened to Clark Kent and later Steve Rogers before receiving his super serum transformation into Captain America.

On August 3rd, Nedoroscik clinched his second bronze medal in the individual pommel horse competition. This achievement generated even more internet humor centered around his unique pre-competition routines.

As a movie reviewer, I found myself captivated by Nedoroscik’s mesmerizing display during Thursday’s announcement. Balancing gracefully on his hands, draped in formal attire, he showcased his impressive pommel horse skills, even managing to swing his legs around his body while maintaining equilibrium. He assured the “GMA” anchors that his presence on “DWTS” wouldn’t just be about gymnastics; there was a hint of mystery and unpredictability in his words. The viral “sleeping” pose, it seemed, would make another appearance on the dance floor.

“As the crucial point approaches and you’re about to match your competitor’s time, your heart starts racing wildly… So I’m making an effort to stay composed,” he clarified. “I’m actually concentrating on my breathing techniques, visualization, and then it’s time to perform.”

He mentioned, “That’s essentially my way of relaxing. So, it’s likely I’ll carry that along when I hit the dance floor.”

On September 4th, “Dancing With the Stars” will reveal their complete lineup of contestants. The new season, number 33, is set to debut on ABC on September 17th.
