I’m so excited – Season 1 is almost here! But the creators, Barbara and Andy Muschietti, are already giving us little hints about what we can look forward to in Season 2. It’s getting me even more hyped!
Producers Barbara and Andy Muschietti, known for the *It* films and the first four episodes of *Welcome to Derry*, recently shared their vision for the show’s timeline. Andy Muschietti explained that he wants to build a larger, unfolding story, comparing it to an iceberg – with most of the narrative hidden beneath the surface throughout the first three seasons.
According to Andy Muschietti, the show will delve deeper into its mythology and provide answers to major mysteries. Season two is set in 1935, and the ending of season one subtly reveals the reason for telling the story over two additional seasons, moving backwards in time. This will eventually lead audiences back to 1962, 27 years before the events of the 2017 film, *It*.
The new series follows Charlotte and Leroy Hanlon (played by Taylour Paige and Jovan Adepo) as they settle in the quiet town of Derry, Maine, with their son, Will (Blake Cameron). Their arrival coincides with the disappearance of a young boy, which signals the return of Pennywise’s terrifying presence. The cast also includes James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, Rudy Mancuso, and Chris Chalk, who will portray Dick Hallorann before the events of *The Shining*.
The movie *It: Welcome to Derry* will draw from both *It* and *It: Chapter Two*, even though Bill Skarsgård was initially unsure about reprising his role. Director Andy Muschietti shared that Skarsgård had recently played many dark characters and was hesitant to take on another similar role.
As a big fan of his work, it didn’t surprise me to hear that really getting *inside* those characters for so long was exhausting for him. He was understandably cautious about taking on another role at first. But then we started talking about the story – really digging into what made it special – and he came around. It was great to see him get excited about it again.
Welcome to Derry Is Important To The Wider It Mythos
The new series features Pennywise, one of the most famous horror villains ever, and goes deeper into the world he lives in and the lasting effects of his terrifying actions – offering more than the previous two movies did.
Andy Muschietti recently shared that the series will delve into the deeper mythology behind the story, appealing to both book and movie fans. He explained that the groundwork laid in the first season will fully come to fruition in seasons two and three, finally answering the big questions about ‘It’ – its motivations and its purpose. The show intends to unravel and clarify all the mysteries surrounding ‘It’ that have long intrigued audiences.
It: Welcome to Derry is currently slated to premiere on Oct. 26.
