Edgar Wright’s new film, The Running Man, is a box office hit. Released in 2025, this science fiction thriller stars Glen Powell and is based on the 1982 Stephen King novel of the same name. The story was previously made into a movie in 1987, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
In 2025, The Running Man was one of four Stephen King stories to hit the big screen that year. It followed the releases of The Monkey, a horror film by Osgood Perkins, The Life of Chuck, a touching drama from Mike Flanagan, and Francis Lawrence’s dystopian thriller, The Long Walk.
According to data from The Numbers, The Running Man has earned $65.9 million worldwide, with $36.7 million coming from US and Canadian theaters and $29.2 million from other countries. This makes it the twelfth highest-grossing movie based on a Stephen King story, and also his top-performing film of 2025.
The movie has earned far more at the box office than The Life of Chuck ($11.4 million) and now exceeds the earnings of other Stephen King adaptations released this year. The Long Walk made $62.9 million, but previously, The Monkey held the record as the highest-grossing adaptation with $63.7 million.
It’s quite an accomplishment that 2025 will be the first year to see four movies based on Stephen King’s books released in theaters, especially considering how often his work has been adapted for film.
Despite being Stephen King’s biggest movie earner of 2025, The Running Man hasn’t made much profit considering how much it cost to produce. With a reported budget of $110 million, the movie has only earned a little over half of that amount so far.
Movies usually need to make two and a half times their production cost in ticket sales just to break even, meaning this film might need to earn around $275 million to become profitable.
The film probably won’t achieve that goal in cinemas, as its theatrical run is nearly over. With almost a month since its November 14th release, it’s anticipated to be available for streaming in mid-December.
I’m a big fan of The Running Man, and while it’s great that people can still watch it on demand, through streaming, on DVD, or on TV, it sounds like the movie really needed to be a huge hit in theaters to actually make a profit. Apparently, it would have had to become one of the top three highest-grossing Stephen King adaptations ever just to break even!
