In 2025, several Stephen King stories were brought to the screen, including both television series and films. But without a doubt, one project stood out as the most successful.
Despite some films like The Life of Chuck, The Long Walk, and The Monkey earning good reviews and drawing audiences to cinemas, the prequel to Stephen King’s It was a huge success. The series launched in late October and remained a chart-topper for several weeks. Even after finishing its initial run in mid-December, It: Welcome to Derry returned to the charts thanks to digital sales and rentals, according to FlixPatrol.
The series It: Welcome to Derry quickly became popular on Amazon, reaching the 10th spot in the U.S. It had previously been number one on iTunes on January 22nd, and later moved to third place by January 25th.
Despite the success of It: Welcome to Derry on HBO Max – critics gave it an 81% rating and audiences a similar 82% – a second season hasn’t been officially announced yet.
Following the Season 1 finale, co-creator Barbara Muschietti discussed HBO’s potential interest in continuing the show. However, she emphasized that Season 1 established a high standard and that producing further seasons wouldn’t be inexpensive.
The show’s success is something we don’t take for granted,” the co-creator said. “We’re definitely interested in continuing it, and it seems like Stephen King and HBO are on board as well. However, we haven’t made a final decision yet.
Season 2 is highly likely to happen. A recent article in The Hollywood Reporter revealed exciting news about the horror series, confirming Andy Muschietti (co-creator of It: Welcome to Derry) is signed on to direct. The report stated that while it hasn’t been officially announced, a second season is currently being developed.
It: Welcome to Derry Should Have Three Seasons
The film series began in 2017 with It, directed by Andy Muschietti. This movie was the first part of an adaptation based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel of the same name. It: Chapter Two, released in 2019, picks up the story twenty-seven years later, continuing from where the group first defeated Pennywise in 2016.
The new series, ‘Welcome to Derry,’ takes place in 1962, 27 years before the original ‘It’ movie. This timing coincides with one of Pennywise the clown’s regular periods of activity – he resurfaces to feed on fear every 27 years. Each season of the show will focus on a different section of Stephen King’s novel.
According to Muschietti, each season of the series will focus on a different historical disaster. He also hinted that the backwards storytelling approach is intentional, with season two set in 1935 and season three taking place even earlier, in 1908. Given the show’s popularity, HBO is expected to announce renewal plans shortly.
It: Welcome to Derry Season 1 is streaming on HBO Max.
