Stephen King Movies All Different: The Long Walk, The Running Man & More
Enthusiasts of Stephen King’s work have much to anticipate, with three distinct films derived from his literature set for release this year. Given that King ranks second in terms of adaptation after William Shakespeare, it’s not entirely unexpected that multiple movies based on his books are due out this year. However, what makes it intriguing is that none of these upcoming films fall under the horror genre – a genre for which King is renowned as the “Master of Horror.” Yet, this deviation from the norm is also thrilling since some of the finest adaptations of Stephen King’s works are not horror movies.
Among the top-tier Stephen King novels are “It,” “The Shining,” and “Salem’s Lot.” These have been transformed into popular horror movies, but his non-horror works have also gained significant success. For instance, “Stand By Me,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” and “The Green Mile” are highly acclaimed King films that were not based on horror novels. Consequently, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming Stephen King movies slated for release this year, as they will demonstrate the author’s diverse storytelling abilities. In particular, “The Life of Chuck,” “The Long Walk,” and “The Running Man” will each present unique perspectives.
The Life Of Chuck, The Long Walk, And The Running Man Are Next Up For King Adaptations
And They All Represent A Different Kind Of King Story
Kicking off in summer 2025 is “The Life of Chuck,” a heartfelt movie about a man named Chuck who learns he has a brain tumor, causing him to contemplate his entire life. Unlike other movies that might focus on horror, this film promises an emotional and inspiring journey. Later in the year, two films titled “The Long Walk” and “The Running Man” will hit the screens, both based on dystopian novels by Stephen King. Despite sharing a dystopian setting, these movies are expected to have distinctly different atmospheres.
Upcoming 2025 Stephen King Movies | Director | Release Date |
---|---|---|
The Life of Chuck | Mike Flanagan | June 13, 2025 |
The Long Walk | Francis Lawrence | September 12, 2025 |
The Running Man | Edgar Wright | November 7, 2025 |
From the preview for “The Long Walk“, it appears this movie will be grim and unsettling, as it tells the story of 100 young men who are forced to walk along U.S. Route 1 until only one remains alive. Conversely, “The Running Man” is expected to deliver an action-packed thrill ride, where protagonist Ben Richards decides to participate in a dangerous game show and must outwit the hunters who seek to eliminate him for monetary rewards. Given that the author isn’t commonly linked to the action genre, “The Running Man” could potentially stand out as one of Stephen King’s most distinctive adaptations.
2025 Already Produced A Typical King Horror Movie
And It Was A Hit
From the plots of the previously mentioned films, it seems evident that The Life of Chuck could captivate viewers, The Long Walk might provoke unease, and The Running Man could offer more action-packed entertainment with a reduced dose of tragedy. Although The Long Walk may incorporate some frightening aspects, none of these productions fit the definition of traditional horror movies. This revelation might displease certain Stephen King fans, but a horror movie adapted from one of his short stories has already been released this year.
2025 saw the unveiling of “The Monkey” in February, an adaption from a short story by the same title. As a film enthusiast, I was particularly captivated by this chilling tale of twin brothers who encounter a wind-up monkey that seems to be responsible for a series of tragic deaths. Critics largely praised “The Monkey,” with many noting its gripping narrative and suspenseful atmosphere. In fact, it held the title of highest-grossing horror movie of the year until the arrival of Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” on the scene. So, if you’re a fan of Stephen King’s horror works, this year has already delivered a terrifyingly faithful adaptation for your enjoyment!
This Is An Exciting Time To Be A Stephen King Fan
There’s Something For Everyone, And Even More On The Way
With the upcoming releases of “The Life of Chuck,” “The Long Walk,” and “The Running Man” this year, it’s an incredibly thrilling time for Stephen King enthusiasts. Moreover, the small-screen adaptation of “It: Welcome to Derry” is set to premiere on HBO this summer. This series will reintroduce us to Pennywise the Clown and bring to life some of the chapter interludes from the highly acclaimed novel “It,” one of King’s most beloved works.
Looking ahead past this current year, there are many thrilling Stephen King projects to anticipate! Mike Flanagan, who’s known for directing “The Life of Chuck,” will carry on adapting King’s works after its release. He’s working on a Carrie miniseries and a Dark Tower show, which could be the most daring King adaptation yet. Furthermore, projects based on Fairy Tale, Billy Summers, Cujo, and Christine are also in progress. So, alongside “The Life of Chuck,” “The Long Walk,” and “The Running Man,” these upcoming projects confirm that it’s a fantastic time to be a fan of Stephen King!
