Stephen King Has Seen Tom Hiddleston’s The Life Of Chuck, And I’m Intrigued About His Take On The Book Becoming A Movie

Over the coming year, there will be several new movies based on Stephen King’s works, with much anticipation surrounding adaptations of well-known novels such as “The Long Walk” and “The Running Man.” However, it’s a less publicized story by King that is set to premiere next week: Mike Flanagan’s movie adaptation of the 2020 novella “The Life Of Chuck,” with Stephen King himself expressing his excitement about this upcoming film.

Although Stephen King is renowned for his horror novels, “The Life of Chuck” deviates from this norm. This life-embracing science fiction drama has been acclaimed as one of Stephen King’s finest movies by Eric Eisenberg of TopMob, with Tom Hiddleston in the lead role. Here’s a recent quote from King regarding the movie:

The film is simply remarkable! I’m unsure if it will attract audiences or not, as its heartfelt nature might not appeal to everyone at this moment. It isn’t overly sweet or emotional, though, because it does address the harsh realities of life. Tom Hiddleston delivers an outstanding performance as Chuck, and I can’t help but be captivated by this movie.

Mike Flanagan, who has previously adapted Stephen King’s sequel to “The Shining” (2019’s “Doctor Sleep”) and “Gerald’s Game,” among other horror projects like “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass,” directed the movie “The Life Of Chuck.” Stephen King himself has expressed his appreciation for Flanagan’s adaptations, and “The Life Of Chuck” is another successful collaboration. The movie and novel, both, trace the life of an ordinary character named Charles “Chuck” Krantz over three phases. Stephen King expressed that he values joy as a significant aspect of human existence, and this work aims to convey that sentiment, deviating from his typical themes like existential anxiety, sorrow, and despair. Despite not having viewed it yet, these remarks pique my interest in watching a contemporary King film that offers a more heartwarming drama rather than a terrifying experience. I’m also intrigued to learn about the author’s concerns regarding the movie’s reception and his thoughts on whether audiences may not respond favorably to a story from him that strays from the horror genre.

Despite King praising the film and acknowledging Hiddleston’s “excellent” acting, it seems he remains uncertain if audiences will flock to a heartwarming production. It’s worth mentioning that previous Stephen King stories not categorized as horror have been adapted into movies, such as 1994’s highly acclaimed The Shawshank Redemption, often regarded as one of the best films ever made, and 1999’s The Green Mile.

Stephen King’s observations could be valid, given that Shawshank had a modest start at the box office with earnings of only $16 million against its production budget of $25 million. In contrast, The Green Mile, featuring Tom Hanks, saw significant success with global revenues exceeding $286 million versus a budget of $60 million. The upcoming release, The Life Of Chuck, will hit theaters on June 6, and we’ll have to wait and see how it fares in terms of box office performance.
