Stephen Graham’s “grubbily authentic” Liverpool-set crime drama gets new UK streaming home

The crime drama Awaydays, starring Stephen Graham and set in Liverpool, is now available on a new UK streaming service. The 2009 film centers around a 19-year-old who becomes involved with a group of football hooligans.

Although the movie didn’t get a lot of attention when it first came out, it’s now available on Prime Video, giving fans a chance to watch it or enjoy it again.

The film Awaydays centers on Paul Carty (Nicky Bell), a teenager who, after his mother’s death, asks his friend Elvis (Liam Boyle) to introduce him to a group of football hooligans known as The Pack, and led by a character named Godden, played by Graham.

As he gets more involved with their lives, a death occurs, creating problems in his connection with Elvis.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the movie felt realistically gritty and genuine. They particularly praised its portrayal of unhappiness, noting that it accurately depicted violence as a destructive escape from emptiness.

I remember reading a review on Digital Spy when Awaydays came out, and they said it was a pretty good coming-of-age story, actually the best of the football hooligan films that had been released recently. They did point out, though, that if it had come out before films like Control and This Is England, it would have really stood out even more.

According to The Guardian, writer Kevin Sampson heavily romanticizes these events, and surprisingly, it’s effective – particularly when the evocative post-punk music swells in the background.

The Sunday Mirror offered a more critical take, stating that while the film attempts to combine 1970s style with a dark setting, the story itself feels weak and has been done better in other films.

Currently, Graham is starring in the second season of his popular show, A Thousand Blows. He recently won a Golden Globe for his work on the highly praised series Adolescence.

Following his recent victory, the actor discussed the possibility of another season of the Netflix series with Deadline. He said he couldn’t say for sure, explaining that the idea was still developing and they’d likely revisit it in three to four years. He encouraged fans to watch for future announcements.
