Stephen Fry, 67, reveals being gay felt like there was 'a horror inside him' when he was teenager and he was known as 'celibate Stephen'

As an ardent admirer of the multi-talented Stephen Fry, I find his journey through life, particularly his experiences as a gay teenager, deeply moving and enlightening. His candidness about his struggles with self-acceptance and the societal pressures he faced is a testament to his courage and resilience. It’s heartwarming to see him acknowledge the role literature played in helping him navigate those challenging times, finding solace and inspiration in the works of authors who dared to be different.

Stephen Fry has spoken candidly about being gay during his teenage years, sharing that he was once referred to as ‘the celibate Stephen.’

In the 1980s, the actor, who is now 67, openly declared that he is gay and has since then been forthright about his sexual orientation.

In a recent conversation with The Times, Stephen openly shared that he once felt as if there was an overwhelming sense of dread within him regarding his homosexuality, and he experienced feelings of rejection.

He explained: ‘In the Eighties, I was known as Celibate Stephen. I was so excited by my work that I forgot to have sex. It was also fear: I always felt rejected in gay bars. I couldn’t dance; I didn’t look cool. All I wanted was to sit and talk. In some ways, though, I was lucky: I lost many friends to Aids.

My being gay brought about many years of sorrow and enlightenment through literature. By the age of 13, my sexuality had become a terrifying secret within me that I struggled to understand and find acceptance for. I was searching for my identity and trying to envision a future for myself. I understood the shame and embarrassment associated with being gay.

He commented: ‘Oscar Wilde showed me that life would be marked by ridicule, exile, and concealment. Furthermore, there were authors such as EM Forster or Somerset Maugham who carried themselves with dignity, making me feel that it wasn’t all about filth and dreary weather in a dismal world of despair.’

At the start of this year, Stephen shared that he doesn’t wish to live beyond 100 years due to the fear of feeling extremely lonely.

The individual, who hasn’t been spotted with his spouse Elliott (age 36) in almost five years, confessed that the thought of living in a world without his loved ones, particularly his friends and family, would be extremely distressing for him.

During a conversation on Evgeny Lebedev’s Brave New World podcast, in the same episode featuring David Walliams, Stephen expressed that while he appreciates the concept of death, the notion of deterioration or decay is what causes him unease.

He shared his viewpoint: ‘For me, prolonging my lifespan isn’t a priority. What truly matters to me, like many others, is achieving a ripe age that is free from discomfort and minimal mental decline.’

‘But I am not someone who wants to live longer than the rest of my friends.’

He went on to say: “If everyone – including my loved ones – reached the age of 120, I might find contentment in surpassing the century mark myself. However, without their company, I’d rather not become the solitary Flying Dutchman, a figure so often romanticized throughout history…

‘Losing everyone close to a survivor, be it family or friends, would undoubtedly bring great sadness.’

Stephen’s comments come nearly five years after he was pictured with his husband, Elliot.

In early January 2015, he got married to Elliott, who is 30 years younger. This was only ten days following their announcement of their engagement.

In the year 2014, Elliot, a resident of Southampton, encountered Stephen. Initially, he was recognized as “Mr. E.”, but later, when they decided to go public, his identity became more widely known.

The couple tends to maintain a private aspect to their relationship, last being photographed together at the high-profile premiere of Rocketman in London back in May 2019.
