Filming is back on track for Stephen Amell’s reboot of an iconic show from the 1990s.
Stephen Amell is most famous for his role as Oliver Queen in the CW’s Arrow, which aired for eight seasons. The show’s popularity led to the creation of several other TV series set in the same superhero universe, often featuring Amell’s character and crossover events. He’s also starred in Heels and briefly in the Suits LA spin-off, and played Casey Jones in the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
Stephen Amell is starring as Hobie Buchannan, the son of Mitch Buchannan (played by David Hasselhoff), in the new Baywatch series on Fox. Filming has restarted after some initial difficulties. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the show will continue filming at Venice Beach. Her office worked with City Council member Traci Park to resolve issues that were slowing down production, such as parking. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series has also received a $21 million tax credit to keep filming in Los Angeles. You can find Mayor Bass’ statement below.
I’m happy Baywatch will continue filming on Venice Beach. When we learned about potential problems with the Los Angeles filming location, my office quickly worked with Councilmember Park to resolve any city-related issues, like simplifying and lowering the cost of parking for the production crew.
This project was a collaborative effort involving my office, Councilmember Park’s team, the County, the Coastal Commission, Fremantle, and FOX. I’m grateful for our ongoing working relationship.
Los Angeles is committed to streamlining the filming process, reducing costs and making it simpler for productions to shoot in the city.
More and more movies and TV shows are being filmed outside of Los Angeles, so it’s great news for the city that the new Baywatch is being filmed there. This is particularly important because, like the original series, the reboot is set in Los Angeles and will showcase the city’s beaches. Filming will take place at Venice Beach, Marina del Rey, Redondo Beach, and the Fox studio lot in Century City.
As a big fan of the original Baywatch, I was really interested to learn more about the characters in the new series. It’s cool that Robbie Buchanan, played by Stephen Amell, actually has a daughter, Charlie Vale (Jessica Belkin), who’s trying to follow in his footsteps and become a lifeguard in LA after leaving a tough situation back in Texas. And it’s awesome to see a familiar face return – David Chokachi is back as Cody Madison! He’s the only original cast member so far, which is a nice nod to the show’s history.
Let’s talk about the supporting cast! We’ve got Hobie’s pal Nat, played by Hassie Harrison, and Noah Beck as a new lifeguard on the scene. Shay Mitchell is making a fun career change as Trina, a former lawyer who’s now training to be a lifeguard, and Thaddeus LaGrone brings some serious experience as Brad, a former marine also joining the Baywatch team. Olivia Dunne is adorable as the eager junior lifeguard Grace, and Brooks Nader is commanding attention as the captain of the Zuma Beach lifeguards, Selene. And yes, the photos are already out – everyone looks fantastic in those classic red swimsuits, naturally!
Following the 2017 Baywatch movie starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jon Bass, and Kelly Rohrbach, a new group of actors – including Amell, Belkin, and Chokachi – are reimagining the series. In the film, Johnson played Mitch and Rohrbach took on the iconic role of C.J. Parker, previously made famous by Pamela Anderson in the original show.
The new series Baywatch is planned to premiere during the 2026-2027 television season on Fox, joining previously renewed shows like Memory of a Killer, Best Medicine, Doc, and Animal Control. Matt Nix, known for creating Burn Notice, is the showrunner and executive producer. McG will direct the first episode and also serves as an executive producer.
