While the recent Suits LA didn’t quite succeed, Stephen Amell’s new show looks promising. After the original Suits became a huge streaming hit in the early 2020s, creator Aaron Korsh developed a California-based spin-off that debuted on NBC in February 2025. Despite a lot of hype, Suits LA quickly disappointed both longtime Suits fans and new viewers, receiving negative reviews and never overcoming its poor initial reception.
Despite a strong cast led by Stephen Amell, and some improvement over its thirteen episodes, Suits LA wasn’t able to gain enough traction. The show was canceled before the final episode even aired, meaning it only lasted one season and became the second Suits spinoff to fail, after Pearson in 2019. Fortunately, Stephen Amell’s part in the new Baywatch reboot looks promising and won’t likely share the same fate.
Suits’ Sudden Resurgence Set Suits LA Up For Failure
The Spinoff Was Trapped In A Lose-Lose Situation
Several things led to the cancellation of Suits LA, but it really never had a chance. Dedicated fans of the original Suits hoped for a continuation of the story they loved, and even newer viewers still pictured Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter. So, when the show introduced Ted Black, a lawyer who claimed to be the nation’s best, many found his confidence to be more fake than charming.
If Suits hadn’t been so incredibly popular, the sudden focus on celebrity drama and murder in Hollywood would have seemed really strange. And if fans hadn’t been clamoring for a Suits continuation, a new spin-off might have been embraced as its own thing instead of feeling like it was just trying to fill the original’s shoes. Suits LA ended up being a confusing mix – it was both innovative and predictable, different enough from Suits to feel separate, yet too similar to avoid constant comparisons, and somehow both dull and over-the-top – but all of these judgments came from measuring it against the original series.
Fox’s New Baywatch Will Benefit From Lower Expectations
Nobody Has Been Anxiously Waiting For Baywatch To Return
Unlike the new Suits LA series, the upcoming Baywatch reboot might avoid some major pitfalls. While Baywatch isn’t as fondly remembered these days – the 2017 movie was widely criticized, and the original show has largely faded from public memory – that could actually be an advantage. It doesn’t have a dedicated, nostalgic fanbase like shows such as The Golden Girls, Twin Peaks, or Firefly. In fact, many younger viewers probably aren’t even familiar with the 1989 lifeguard series.
The 2026 Baywatch reboot is taking a very different approach than Suits LA, and this could be both good and bad. Unlike Suits LA, the original Baywatch isn’t currently popular, there’s no strong demand for it to return, and many potential viewers will only know it from the movie starring Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson. While this lack of existing buzz might actually help the reboot stand on its own, it’s still a risky project for Fox.
The Baywatch Reboot Is Still A Major Risk
The Original Series Doesn’t Necessarily Need A Reboot
While Suits LA was somewhat hindered by the popularity of the original Suits, the established fanbase gave the spin-off a head start. The new Baywatch reboot, however, faces a bigger challenge since the original series is no longer as widely popular. How the reboot approaches attracting viewers will be crucial to its success. The original Baywatch was a huge hit, attracting over a billion viewers with its over-the-top and often funny storylines. If the reboot doesn’t embrace that same playful spirit and takes itself too seriously, it’s unlikely to succeed—there won’t be anything to save it, not even the iconic slow-motion shots.
| The Cast Of Fox’s Upcoming Baywatch Reboot | |
|---|---|
| Actor | Role |
| Stephen Amell | Hobie Buchannon |
| Jessica Belkin | Charlie Vale |
| David Chokachi | Cody Madison |
| Shay Mitchell | Trina |
| Hassie Harrison | Nat |
| Thaddeus LaGrone | Brad |
| Brooks Nader | Selene |
| Livvy Dunne | Grace |
| Noah Beck | Luke |
The new cast is already generating online discussion, with some feeling it’s too focused on attracting younger viewers and potentially turning off longtime fans of the original Baywatch. The inclusion of internet stars like Noah Beck and Livvy Dunne might not appeal to everyone. However, the reboot still has promise. Successful reboots can often exceed the original and revitalize a franchise, and while Suits LA didn’t quite hit the mark, Stephen Amell and Fox’s Baywatch reboot has a lot of potential for success.
