Stephen Amell says he was “c**k-blocked” out of NCIS spin-off role

As a seasoned gamer of life with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of empathy for Stephen Amell, the Arrowstar who’s been c**k-blocked out of a role on NCIS: Origins. Having auditioned for not one, but two high-profile roles in the same week, and losing both to unknown factors, I can relate to his frustration.

Stephen Amell has suggested that he was “c**k-blocked” out of a role in NCIS: Origins.

Last week, the actor from ‘Arrow’ shared details on trying out for the new NCIS prequel series, all while securing a role in the Suits spin-off, Suits: LA.

That particular week, my main concern centered around an audition I had scheduled for a Wednesday – it was for a prequel to NCIS that was being produced. In this role, I aimed to portray a younger version of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, as I shared during the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast.

The star expressed his eagerness about the possibility of hosting a network program, and thought the audition had gone exceptionally well.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase that to: “I received fantastic responses,” I went on. “Up until then, I hadn’t explored the side-quests for Suits: LA, but on Thursday afternoon, I stumbled upon some juicy insider info – ‘We believe this project is going to progress’ – and just like that, everything went quiet.

“It seemed as though somebody, at some point, had put up an invisible barrier for me… Leaving me puzzled about the situation, and I became quite aggravated.” (Informal: “I felt like someone put a stop to my game, leaving me confused and annoyed.”)

The role of young Gibbs eventually went to Catch-22’s Austin Stowell.

In an open discussion, Amell shared more details about his preparations for the role in Suits: LA. He confessed that he experienced a emotional breakdown en route to the audition, triggered by several issues.

On my way to an audition, I phoned my wife, but received some distressing news about personal matters. Adding to this stress, I was taking care of our children alone for a week and felt slighted regarding the NCIS project. All these factors culminated in a deeply emotional breakdown in the car, with me crying and shouting.

I entered that audition without much apprehension. I approached it with a more relaxed and spontaneous attitude, as I believed this character should be intelligent yet not overly formal. However, I also anticipated everyone else being very serious, so I decided to inject some fun into the process.

Looking back, it seems as though I landed the part that was meant for me all along, and in hindsight, things always have a way of falling into place.

The debut of NCIS: Origins takes place on October 14th, exclusively on CBS in the United States. In the UK, seasons 1 to 20 of NCIS can currently be streamed on Disney+.
