The new film Sentimental Value, starring Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning, just released a trailer before its UK debut. Following a well-received premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, this latest movie from director Joachim Trier is expected to be a strong contender for awards.
The movie stars Alexander Skarsgård as Gustav Borg, a famous director who has a strained relationship with his daughters, Nora and Agnes. When Gustav starts making a film about his life, it forces them to confront painful memories from the past and brings them back together.
The latest trailer highlights the tension within the Borg family, which gets worse when Rachel Kemp (Fanning), the new lead actress in Gustav’s movie, joins the production.
What to Read Next
The film is described as a touching story about family, memories, and how art can help people make amends. It’s director Trier’s first movie since 2021’s The Worst Person in the World, and it again features Renate Reinsve as the main character.
Similar to that movie, Sentimental Value has been chosen as Norway’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards, and it’s considered a strong contender due to the positive reviews it has received.

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 96% approval rating from 118 critics, with the general consensus being that the film skillfully examines the complex relationship between creating art and forming personal bonds, making it a remarkably thoughtful piece.
According to Rolling Stone, the heart of Sentimental Value lies in the dynamic between Skarsgård and Reinsve. Their performances beautifully capture the complex relationship many people have with their fathers – a struggle almost everyone can relate to.
Critics are calling this film a powerful and emotional success story about family, legacy, and the way stories can connect us. The Daily Beast described it as a ‘tumultuous, moving triumph,’ and LAist even declared it ‘the best movie of the year.’

Despite its short runtime of just two hours and thirteen minutes, the film Sentimental Value is remarkably rich in emotional depth and visual storytelling, according to Slate. Elle magazine described it as deeply moving and heartwarming.
I read a review on Vulture, and they really loved the game! They said ‘Sentimental Value’ isn’t just about art, history, or even feelings – it’s a surprisingly honest and fun look at what family really means. It sounds pretty special, honestly.
Sentimental Value will be released in UK cinemas on 26 December, before coming to Mubi in 2026.
