Starz renews Sweetpea: Ella Purnell will return as twisted killer Rhiannon Lewis
As a self-proclaimed aficionado of dark comedy thrillers, I am absolutely ecstatic about the return of Rhiannon Lewis (or should I say Sweetpea) in another twisted season! Ella Purnell’s portrayal of this enigmatic character has been nothing short of mesmerizing, and her performance is undoubtedly a career highlight.
Rhiannon Lewis is set to come back even more tangled in the upcoming season of the darkly comedic mystery series Sweetpea. Starz and Sky Original confirmed the renewal on Tuesday, approximately two months following the premiere of the show’s first season with all six episodes.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to say that the captivating Ella Purnell, known for her stellar roles in “Yellowjackets” and “Fallout”, takes on the intriguing lead part in this story. She portrays a seemingly tranquil young woman who hides a dark secret, adding an element of mystery to her character.
For much of her existence, Rhiannon has been a quiet observer in life, often blending into the background as a receptionist. Beneath this tranquil exterior, however, seethes a tempest of murderous thoughts. Her sole source of support is her ailing father. A catastrophic event triggers a profound shift in Rhiannon’s life, prompting her to break free from her restraints and fully embrace the dark emotions she has harbored for so long.
Starz guarantees fans that the upcoming second season will feature Rhiannon grappling with her hidden, dangerous truth.
Regarding the series, Purnell – who is also one of the showrunners – considers portraying her character’s “growth through anger” phase as a particularly memorable experience for her acting-wise. The audience seems to be resonating with the character’s unique quirks and intricate personality traits.
According to Starz Networks President Alison Hoffman, Ella Purnell’s remarkable acting encapsulated the story of a woman discovering her voice for the first time, and we are delighted by the positive feedback both from critics and viewers.
Last October, “Sweetpea” was warmly received by critics, earning a 86% positive rating from Rotten Tomatoes after 21 reviews were tallied. Critics commended the series for its daring exploration of revenge fantasies, with much praise directed towards Purnell for her captivating and ruthless central role.
Purnell has made a name for herself in the realm of genre narratives, with her appearances in well-known horror and sci-fi productions such as Yellowjackets, Fallout, Star Trek: Prodigy, Arcane, and Army of the Dead. Up next, she will grace our screens in The Scurry, a humorous horror movie that revolves around lethal squirrels.
It’s been confirmed that Fallout season 2 will indeed continue, with production having begun last month. This suggests that Purnell might not be back on the Sweetpea set until she completes filming for the second season of her Amazon Prime Video series.
If you missed out on the first season so far, here’s great news! In the UK, you can now stream all six episodes on Sky and the NOW service. For our friends in the US and Canada, the show is available to watch on the Starz streaming app or channel. Enjoy the series!
