Starfleet Academy Cast Calls New Trek Series ‘Hormonal’ and Exciting

The franchise is moving forward with its latest version, Paramount+’s upcoming show “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” which is scheduled to debut in 2026. This series, taking place within the same timeline as the final seasons of the original show, unfolds after the devastating event known as “The Burn” that destroyed the Federation. In this new series, a fresh group of students are enrolled at Starfleet Academy following the Federation’s rebuilding process.

In their latest chat with the press, an actor from Starfleet Academy, namely Bella Shepard or Kerrice Brooks, is shedding some intriguing insights about the upcoming series. According to Shepard, the program offers a “refreshingly thrilling” spin on the Star Trek universe. However, Brooks, fresh off her recent role, presents a unique perspective on the show.

One Word to Describe Starfleet Academy: ‘Hormonal’

“Brooks laughed and referred to us as ‘hormonal’ since we’re still learning and growing, much like characters in real life. On the show, we’re definitely navigating through our experiences and discovering who we are,” he explained.

Brooks’ description hints at the relatively fresh faces in the cast of the new Starfleet Academy series, which appears to mark one of the first ventures of the franchise into exploring characters with less-experienced Starfleet careers. Unlike its other series that mainly focus on mature Starfleet personnel, this show seems to cater to a broader age range, including young viewers. Featuring actors like and Paul Giamatti, Starfleet Academy might attract fans of various ages.

Brooks Assures Fans Things Won’t Be ‘Spoon-Fed’

Brooks commented that “Starfleet Academy” doesn’t seem overly young adult-oriented. He explained, “It doesn’t appear as though things are oversimplified or excessively explained. The show seems to be challenging the cadets in a way that mirrors real life, gradually bringing us up to speed instead of watering down the content for a younger audience.” Brooks further added, “We’re not being lowered to their level; rather, we’re joining a Federation and must rise to the occasion ourselves.

Shephard commented about the younger actors in the series, “We’re essentially young adults navigating some genuine challenges…excuse me (laughs). Serious matters. We don’t know our destination. We basically find our way as our characters do.” In other words, they are unsure of where their characters will end up.

Filming Wrapped Earlier this Year

The upcoming show on Paramount+ hasn’t announced a premiere date yet. In addition to Giamatti, Hunter, Brooks, and Shephard, Starfleet Academy will include Oded Fehr, Tig Notaro, and Mary Wiseman from Star Trek: Discovery, as well as Robert Picardo reprising his role as the holographic doctor, previously seen on both Voyager and Prodigy. Furthermore, the cast also features Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, George Hawkins, and others.

Robert Picardo on Playing the Holo-Doctor Again

In the popular show, Starfleet Academy, we find ourselves in the 32nd century, where Starfleet has been rebuilt following a devastating event known as ‘The Burn’. This new class at Starfleet Academy is the first to enroll in over a century, according to Picardo’s remarks.

My character is currently serving as a teacher there. Frankly, our producer Alex Kurtzman mentioned that it’s fitting for the doctor to teach cadets on Prodigy, going so far as to say it made perfect sense. He even hinted at the doctor teaching Starfleet Academy cadets in the future. So I believe my role on Prodigy played a significant part in making this happen.

Starfleet Academy is scheduled to debut in 2026 on Paramount+, and the entire Star Trek series can currently be found streaming there.
