Star Wars: Starfighter Is Most Like This Beloved Sci-Fi Movie

While shooting Star Wars: Starfighter, director Shawn Levy has said the film is similar in quality to a classic, highly-regarded science fiction movie.

What movie is Star Wars: Starfighter most like?

Shawn Levy recently discussed his upcoming Starfighter film in an interview with Collider, while promoting the final season of Stranger Things. He explained that Starfighter isn’t a sequel or prequel, but a completely new story with original characters and a fresh timeline. While it will draw on familiar themes from the Star Wars universe, the goal is to offer something new for both longtime fans and general moviegoers. Levy said they’re aiming for a similar tone to the original A New Hope – playful, adventurous, and with a good sense of humor – and are using that as a guiding principle throughout the filmmaking process.

Released in 1977, George Lucas’s Star Wars completely transformed science fiction films and the movie business. It introduced iconic characters like Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Han Solo, and quickly became a massive hit. For five years, it was the highest-grossing film ever made, until E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial took the title.

Levy emphasized how thrilling it was to create a Star Wars project that wasn’t restricted by previous installments. He explained that Lucasfilm actively encouraged him to explore new ideas, relieving any pressure to simply copy what had been done before. Instead, they fostered a genuine appreciation for the existing Star Wars legacy.

The new Star Wars film, Starfighter, was revealed at Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025. The story will focus on an uncle trying to keep his nephew safe from dangerous enemies. Ryan Gosling will star, joined by Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. The script was written by Jonathan Trooper, who previously collaborated with the director on the 2022 film The Adam Project.

Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027.
