Shawn Levy explains two Star Wars: Starfighter photos

Shawn Levy recently shared details about the initial photos released from the filming of Star Wars: Starfighter.

During a recent appearance on the podcast ‘On Film with Kevin McCarthy,’ director Greta Gerwig explained that the popular photos featuring Ryan Gosling and his young co-star, Flynn Gray, weren’t planned scenes. She said the first picture was taken while filming on the Mediterranean Sea, and the second was snapped next to a speeder prop inside a studio set.

Levy explained that neither of the photos was pre-arranged. Someone had asked him if Lucasfilm and Disney were being unusually strict with Star Wars, and he pointed out the surprising fact that both photos happened spontaneously.

The director remembered noticing a striking image during a camera test. He explained that there were two instances – one during the test itself, and another while filming at sea – where he spontaneously saw a beautiful shot and immediately asked someone to take a picture.

So, I was on set and something amazing happened! I quickly snapped a photo with my phone, and right then and there, with Kathleen Kennedy – she was actually there with me on location – I asked if it was okay to share it with everyone. I was so excited, I just wanted the world to see it!

The director explained that the images were created after being inspired by moments of wonder and a sense of magic in everyday life.

This conversation started after Levy shared a behind-the-scenes look at the movie on Instagram.
