Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will introduce a new kind of Jedi
As a seasoned Star Wars gamer with over two decades of immersion in this galaxy far, far away, the latest revelation about Skeleton Crew has me more excited than a Wookiee in a Kessel Run. The prospect of a new Jedi character, particularly one who is not just another clone of Obi-Wan or Yoda, is a breath of fresh air.
According to Entertainment Weekly’s recent interview with Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, the creators of “Skeleton Crew”, it has been confirmed that the series features a Jedi character.
Watts and Ford conversed about collaborating with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to develop the post-Imperial era, a time marked by lawlessness and the dominance of space pirates, like those we met in The Mandalorian Season 3. They spoke about the atmosphere following the Empire’s collapse and how they aimed to portray the perils of a galaxy without order, where a band of lost kids might be encountered. Ford also revealed discussions surrounding a new type of Jedi character.
The duo further discussed their experience working alongside Dave Filoni, who they refer to as a “guardian” at Lucasfilm. Watts clarifies that Dave Filoni’s role is to guide writers and producers about the creative boundaries in the Star Wars universe, what has been previously established, and what might violate canon.
He actually is a great hockey player, but he’s also a figurative goalkeeper… And you always end up with a bunch of other episodes of Star Wars to go watch and things to go read, and it’s good. You feel like you can safely explore things creatively without making some huge canonical mistake.

Christopher Ford, one of the co-creators, points out how Filoni’s past work under George Lucas proves beneficial. By grasping the guidelines set by Lucas for the Star Wars universe, Filoni skillfully combines this knowledge with his ability to innovate, resulting in new characters such as a potential Jedi we encounter in the series, who seem to fit seamlessly within the established universe.
And he gets both sides of that because he did that [mentoring under] George Lucas. So he gets that thing of, ‘I want to make a whole new kind of a Jedi,’ and then someone being like, ‘Okay, hold on. A lot of people have thought about this. Let’s do this the right way.’ And it’s so helpful.
Although Ford doesn’t explicitly identify him, the “novel type of Jedi” appears to be referring to the character portrayed by Jude Law, Jod Na Nawood. While it has only been hypothesized that Law is playing a Jedi, no official confirmation has been made yet. This hint could potentially satisfy fans’ expectations and infuse an air of mystery around the character, who seems to differ significantly from previous Jedi depictions.
The unique qualities that set Jod apart as a Jedi will become clear when the series “Skeleton Crew” airs on December 3, exclusively on Disney+.
