Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will feature space pirates inspired by Monkey Island!
As a seasoned gamer and avid Star Wars fan who’s navigated through countless galaxies, battles, and time periods, I must say I’m thrilled about the upcoming series, Skeleton Crew. The blend of classic Star Wars lore with a hint of Monkey Island humor has my heart racing like a Corellian engine in overdrive!
Over the last few years, we’ve experienced some intriguing moments in the distant galaxy. Although the production of Star Wars films has temporarily halted – with the exception of The Mandalorian & Grogu set to premiere in 2025 – there have been numerous television series to keep us engaged. Some of these shows have reached great heights, such as Andor. Unfortunately, others haven’t managed to captivate a sizable audience and had to be terminated, like The Acolyte. Predicting the success of new Star Wars productions is always a challenge until they’re released.
The upcoming production that’s soon to be unveiled is titled “Skeleton Crew“, and following the recent statements made by co-creator Jon Watts, I can confidently say my anticipation has peaked. This intriguing story revolves around a quartet of kids who stumble upon a hidden truth, which propels them on an interstellar adventure with an enigmatic figure known as Jod Na Nawood (portrayed by Jude Law). Their mission is to return home, but they’ll undoubtedly encounter numerous challenges, one of which involves encounters with space pirates!

Entertainment Weekly has unveiled an exclusive first glimpse of the pirate crew, accompanied by an interview with creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford. For a full view of these swashbuckling pirates, head over to Entertainment Weekly. Here are some intriguing details: Jaleel White, best known for his role as Steve Urkel on Family Matters, takes on one of the pirate roles. Additionally, you might recognize Vane (played by Marti Matulis), who appeared in season 3 of The Mandalorian, where he engaged in a confrontation with Mando and Greef Karga.
This placement within the Star Wars timeline suggests that the show unfolds after Mando’s adventures in season 3 but before the events of The Force Awakens. Previously, Vane had deserted his pirate comrades during their siege on Nevarro. It appears he has joined a new gang now. As for the atmosphere we can expect, given the time period, it seems we’ll delve into the lawlessness that thrives as the Empire is no more, and piracy flourishes once again in certain parts of the galaxy, as Ford explained.
Overall, the Skeleton Crew team was particularly eager to delve into the subject of pirates, given their rich cinematic history. As Ford points out, “Pirates are frequently discussed in Star Wars.” People even referred to Han Solo as a pirate, and he’d retort, ‘How dare you?’ We’ve also seen some fantastic pirates in the animated series. So, this was an area where both Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau were keen to expand on the pirate themes.
But it wasn’t only the tone of the pirates in Star Wars that influenced Skeleton Crew. Watts, a fan of Monkey Island as well, mentioned that both share Lucas’ classic style. So, we might say the pirates in Skeleton Crew are somewhere between those found in Star Wars and Monkey Island, striking a balance that seems fitting.
And that gets me excited. If you’re not familiar with Monkey Island, it was a series of puzzle-solving video games that LucasArts produced starting in the 1990s. They had a pretty wacky and hilarious sense of humor, which bodes well for Skeleton Crew.
Watts mentioned that it’s beneficial for the “Skeleton Crew” team to have Dave Filoni as their guide, saying, “What I love about working at Lucasfilm is that they keep you within the set boundaries.” He referred to Dave Filoni as our ‘guardian’.
He actually is a great hockey player, but he’s also a figurative goalkeeper. We will come up with ideas of things that we like, and then he’ll be like, ‘Actually, maybe it’s this.’ Or, ‘Oh, we already did something like that somewhere else.’ And you always end up with a bunch of other episodes of Star Wars to go watch and things to go read, and it’s good. You feel like you can safely explore things creatively without making some huge canonical mistake.
The new Star Wars spin-off titled “Skeleton Crew” is set to debut on December 3rd. Fingers crossed, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford have crafted a series that will strike a chord with viewers across all age groups. Additionally, many are eager to bring some excitement back to the Star Wars universe.
